Coconut Allergy Question

(Casaundra Bacon) #1

Hello! I’m really wanting to try the Keto diet, I’ve been looking up recipes and it seems like everything is coconut oil and I’m deathly allergic. Would anyone know what to substitute for it? Palm oil is a no no too.

Also, half the stuff people don’t think has coconut does. It goes by like a million different names. So if anyone with a coconut allergy is on this diet and would be willing to share how they do it, I would super appreciate it!

coconut oil makes me bloated. I am not allergic to it but I do not tolerate it very well.

you can replace it with butter, ghee or olives oil.

Or lard, tallow, bacon grease, or avocado oil, as well.

I don’t have a coconut allergy. But I don’t like how coconut, coconut oil, coconut oil make me feel. Perhaps it’s an intolerance. There’s nothing special I do. I just eat real food and don’t use coconut products or ingredients. And I’m not a big recipe maker, but there are substitutes for coconut flour if that’s your jam. You just have to look up the conversions. Keto doesn’t require coconut, so there shouldn’t be an issue.

Only one general remark concerning possible side effects of coconut oil. This oil is a powerful remedy for bacteria, infections, virus, yeast and inflammations due to it’s high content of caprylic acid. So whenever you feel pain or nausea after eating coconut oil (as happened to me for some time) make sure that this is not due to the fact that this oil is simply doing it’s job, to clean up the body.

Many keto recipes that use flour use nut flours. For keto baked goods nut flours are used more often than coconut flour. If you have a dairy allergy, too, that does limit fats to use. I have a dairy allergy and suspect a problem with coconut (makes my heart race) so I’ve been limited to avocado oil, olive oil, lard, bacon fat, tallow (which I don’t like very much, so I don’t really use it) and duck fat. Duck fat has a pretty mild flavor. I will use that in place of butter when butter would be more appropriate than saturated fats from other meats.

The reason people like coconut oil, in particular, with keto is because coconut oil has medium chain fatty acids which get converted directly to ketones. Coconut oil is definitely not a necessity.

It’s not that I think I’m allergic, it’s that if I’m around the smell or eat anything with coconut my throat shuts and I end up in the emergency room. Shampoo has coconut in it (every single liquid shampoo… does by lots of names) most of them make my scalp bleed.

But thank you for the information! Very helpful.

I am amazed how much I like avocado oil, and how light the taste is. And I don’t like the taste or smell of avocados.

olive oil, avocado oil, macadamia oil, butter, ghee, bacon grease

Macadamia oil definitely has a nutty taste to it. I haven’t used it as a salad dressing, yet. I bet that would be good. I did use it to make mayo once. Let’s say, the mayo was … interesting.

Macamayo? That’s just nuts!!! :rofl::rofl::rofl::rofl::rofl::rofl:

(I just slay me, sometimes! :grin:)

Meat, fish, veggies, eggs, nuts, seeds, cheese. No coconut there! No seeds oils. Maybe avocado? Not sure why you would think Keto was all about eating processed foods. Processed foods on keto are a no-no. Eat whole foods.
