From the BBC
Fizzy drinks giant Coca-Cola is planning to close two of its UK sites with the loss of almost 300 jobs.
The proposal would affect a manufacturing site in Milton Keynes and a distribution centre in Northampton.
A company statement said: “We know today’s news will be upsetting for our people at these sites, and our immediate priority is to support them throughout the consultation process.”
It added that the closures “would provide significant productivity improvements and create greater efficiency across our manufacturing and distribution operations in Great Britain”.
Some 288 jobs would be lost when the sites shut in 2019.
Of course not great if you lose your job but the reasons are management speak for cutting back of jobs, the real reason is lower sales. This came on the back of the news that the Sugar Tax will mean Coke increasing prices of bottle and changing from 1.75L bottles to 1.5L ones.
Now I know some on here are of a libertarian strand and believe govt should not be doing this, I respectfully disagree. In the UK we have massively increased fag prices, restricted the sales, banned advertising etc because it is unhealthy and it kills, most countries do in the Western World, coke/sugar are just as bad.
I see this as good news in the long term !
