Clogged Arties and Keto

(Kenneth) #1

Just taking an opportunity to share my good news and offer it as an encouragement to everyone.

I started my Keto journey April 2018 and by August of 2019 I had lost around 40lbs and have hit and maintained my goal 18% Body Fat over the last year (with little to no exercise). Currently, my diet has been mainly Low Carb (sometimes keto), but there will be weeks-at-a-time that I go back to the Standard American Diet.

Like many of you, when I started Keto, many people told me eating that much FAT and Red Meat would clog my arteries and kill me. All of the men in my family have died of clogged arteries and heart attacks, so this is a major issue for me. To get a base line, in July of 2018, I had a Coronary Artery Calcium (CAC) Scan. To my absolute surprise, my CAC Score was a ZERO; which means I had absolutely zero calcium buildup in any of my arteries… No Blockage.

This was the PERFECT baseline, because IF my friends were correct any future score greater than Zero could prove them correct. But if I scored a Zero in the future, then all of the science (that we already know to be true) has proven itself True yet again … and did I mention, they would also be wrong. So, drum roll please … yesterday, August 10, 2020, I had my follow-up CAC Scan and scored another ZERO!!!

I am so thankful for the Keto Community. I received so much encouragement and tons of real science that proves that this lifestyle IS HEALTHY. Thanks everyone! #KetoOn

Congrats Ken! It is always good to hear that what we choose to believe and pursue is backed by other personal experiences and results. Good to hear your reaping the rewards! Hopefully many of us have a similar story to share in the future. :+1::clap:

After about 5.5 years low carb/keto, this was my result:

At the time, I was 55.

Part of the reason for my getting this was because I wanted to see if “saturated fat” “clogged the arteries”.

I also wanted to see the effect of my ridiculously high Lp(a) level (300+ nmol/l or 125 mg/dl). (To put these in perspective, “ideal” is <75 nmol/l or <30 mg/dl, so I’m about 4 times that.)

I eat nothing but meat now since March 1st. Before that Keto for 1 and 3/4 years. My CAC is 2 in one artery. The scan is cheap so I plan on getting another in a year or so. I feel the damage to the arteries is caused by high insulin levels not fat in the diet.

(You've tried everything else; why not try bacon?) #5

Not to mention that this way of eating is unsustainable. Presumably it kills us whether we can keep eating keto or not.
