Chronic kidney disease and keto

(Sandra) #1

Hello,

I am new to the group and I have just restarted keto on January 1st. I know this way of life works so this time will be a lifestyle change.

I’m posting because my dad has stage 3 kidney disease and I’m wondering if anyone has had experience with doing the keto diet with kidney disease? He is a Vietnam veteran and the healthcare he receives is not good so I thought I would reach out to try to get advice from real people with real experiences. I feel that this way of eating would benefit him but I’m wondering what others think.

Thank you,

Sandy

HI lived with stage 4 kidney disease for 10 years on dialysis. Diet is a tricky thing with renal failure and most of the renal diet is totally in opposition to keto style eating. Recommended foods are white bread and white flour products, white rice, low protein, lower fat intake. Low protein is required because your kidneys have to process excess protein which turns into BUN (Blood Urea Nitrogen) which has to be removed by dialysis. Totally limiting any high potassium or high phosphorus foods as much as possible i.e. not too much meat, very limited dairy(double whammy there!) avocado, tomatoes, bran from whole grains, you get the idea.

When the kidneys are not working up to capacity phosphorus and potassium can build up in the blood and cause bone deterioration, organ calcification, and cardiovascular risk (they use potassium for lethal injection executions) and a myriad of other issues. Water intake is also limited to 500 ml. In many cases where there is no longer urinating. So at stage 4 already too late for keto IMHO. I was lucky to get a transplant 12/2017 and started keto with two doctors approval to try and thwart post transplant pre-diabetes that I was starting to get from being on prednisone for life. If he’s still has kidney function it may be possible, or it might just be a strain that puts him over the edge into dialysis. Personally I would seek out a keto friendly doctor for advice.

Have had stage 3/4 CKD for a year now. My nephrologist is more than fine with the ketogenic way of life. It is an old wife’s tale that protein damages the kidneys, according to him. I am under no dietary or fluid restrictions but I am NOT on dialysis.
DO find a keto friendly nephrologist for advice and consult.

I would love to find a keto friendly nephrologist for him but due to him having his health care through the VA they choose who he sees. We did just relocate so I’m going to see if I can go with him to his appointment. Thank you for all your information.

I have some problems with my kidneys. I passed some protein. I’ve been doing keto for a year. My nephrologist wasn’t concerned about it. He said protein is not the problem early in the game. Unless tests were completely in the normal range. Keto isn’t all about big piles of protein. It’s high-fat, moderate protein, low carb.

There’s Great obesity code podcast on kidney disease. Dec 19, 2017

If you dont mind…how early in the game are we talking?

(Vicki ) #7

Was wondering how you are doing on keto…has it helped or hindered your kidney labs.

Sorry, I haven’t looked at this for a really long time. All of my labs fall in the normal range. I don’t know if you could say that my kidneys have healed from the episode with my bodies autoimmune response to a virus. We are just monitoring it once yearly and so far I seem to be just fine. Thank you for asking it really worried me for a while. Now we just watch. I know that the keto diet is a healthy dietFor many issues. And it certainly doesn’t hurt.

So your labs were always good… you had just showed protein in your urine?

So is keto helping with your kidneys

I had a virus a number of years ago that caused an episode of HSP. I went to the doctor and they sent me to a dermatologist who took a punch of one blotch on my shoulder. And diagnosed it as HSP, and sent me to a nephrologist. I was placed on steroids. It seemed to knock back the Purpera, although I had another episode aboutTwo months after that. And I went back on steroids. My test showed some protein in my urine and some other things like my creatinine were off. I tested several times that year, and then went to bi-annually and later to annually. Overtime all my tests have produced results blood and urine within the normal range. We are taking a wait-and-see approach. I really can’t speak to whether or not keto helped because I started that many years after I had this episode. Although one of the years that I’ve visited my nephrologist he remarked on how high my Ketone’s were. Ha ha Ha. I mentioned I was on the keto diet and was that a problem and he said no.
