Choczero

Anyone try choc zero bars? Keto friendly?

I haven’t tried choczero bars, however I have purchased and re-purchased choczero maple pecan syrup. If the bar is as good as the syrup it might be worth doing for that emergency “I need something sweet”

Yeah, I like them. I get the Dark Chocolate with Sea Salt bars with either almonds or hazelnuts. I can eat at least two bars per day and stay in ketosis.

The one thing you have to watch out for is that if you order them during hot weather, they may arrive melted. Choc Zero ships their bars with cold packs in the packaging, but it’s definitely not cold enough during the hot months in the Phoenix area. The bars are still edible even after being melted, but their not as good - some of the ingredients separate so that you have powdery stuff in some sections and brown shiny stuff in others.

Oh my goodness…I had never hear of this product, so I looked it up…wowzah, does it sound good!! I like the fact that they use monk fruit in it! I hope I can locate it someplace!!:tada:

The monk fruit sweetener that ChocZero uses tastes “natural” to me. I.e. my taste buds can’t tell it apart from a sugar sweetened chocolate.

I tend to not like Stevia or sugar alcohol sweeteners that other products use. The most recent ones I’ve tried are Notty Peppermint Bark and Notty Fluffernutter Bark; these use Stevia and erythritol as sweeteners. They just taste “off” to me, though no better or worse than other products using these sweeteners.

Well… let me tell ya… they arent as rich as say… Lilys. But… its a good treat. However, i began chowing down on lots of them and was wondering why i was craving so bad. So apparently… some of the choc zero products are made with “vegetable fibre” which is also known as tapioca fibre. Which is not actually defined by the FDA as a regulated Fibre meaning that even though the product is low in carb…we cant be sure how much we can subtract carbs using the fibte grams when its not a true fibre.

Point: I ate…i craved…i quit. Never again touchin it

Also, dont bother with the milk chocolate inless you like cheap chocolate feel and taste! Reminds me of those kid easter bunnies K-Mart and Zellers sold.

I checked the ingredient list on a recently purchased bag of ChocZero Dark Chocolate with Sea Salt w/ Almonds. The ingredients are: Dark Chocolate (Unsweetened Chocolate Cocoa Butter), Soluble Corn Fiber, Almonds, Sea Salt, Sunflower Lecithin, Monk Fruit Extract, Madagascar Bourbon Vanilla Beans.

I see a similar list for the bars with Hazelnuts (with the obvious substitution of hazelnuts for almonds).

So… no tapioca fiber listed for those products.

When I did a search regarding tapioca fiber, I found this link - I skimmed it and it seemed worth reading:

Edit:

As noted above, the ChocZero bars that I’ve been consuming do have soluble corn fiber. I found this article about SCF…

…which states that “It can spike your blood glucose and kick you out of ketosis.”

That got me worried. I had consumed three ChocZero bars in the late morning after eating my first meal of the day at around 10:00am. As I write this, It’s now late afternoon.

My BG and BK at 7:37am was 101 mg/dL and 1.2 mmol/L. (That BG reading is pretty good for me. It’s often up around 106-116.)

At 4:30pm, I got readings of BG=96 mg/dL and BK=1.3 mmol/L.

So… I’m definitely still in ketosis since my BK reading is greater than 0.5 mmol/L.

We really don’t know if consuming those ChocZero bars temporarily spiked my blood glucose, since I didn’t take a measurement that was perhaps an hour after consuming them. I may try that experiment tomorrow.

Edit again…

Thinking back, I do remember a time when ChocZero bars did spike my BG. It was back in 2018 when these bars were still new. It may be the case that the bars back then did contain tapioca fiber. I do know that the color and consistency was different back then.

Anyway, I consulted my spreadsheet and see that on 2018-04-25, I conducted an experiment with the then new (to me, anyway) ChocZero bars…

9:17am, fasted: BG=101, BK=2.6
12:08pm, still fasted: BG=108, BK=1.2
I then consumed two and a half strips of ChocZero Keto Bark - one dark chocolate and one and a half milk chocolate.
12:47pm, after eating chocolate: BG=171, BK=1.1
1:29pm, a little over an hour after eating the chocolate: BG=144, BK=1.0
2:25pm: BG=96, BK=0.9

On the next day, 2018-04-26, at 6:42am, I saw fasted readings of BG=101, BK=2.8.

So even then, consuming those bars didn’t kick me out of ketosis. I do remember being alarmed at the time because 171 was (and still is) the highest blood glucose reading that I’ve ever seen during my testing.
