Yes, I really miss rootbeer float it was my favorite :weary:

(Dan Dan) #24

I thought I was the only one who did that :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

I gave up gum for months and then I thought, one stick of sugar free gum after a meal won’t kill me. And so far it hasn’t. :slightly_smiling_face:

the only thing is Xylitol spikes most peoples blood sugar about 30% as much as sugar.

Better to have stevia, monk fruit or Erythritol as they do not spike blood sugars.

Just to clarify here: The paper did not report which sugar-free gum they used (or did I miss)? And there was in fact an insulin-reponse, although non-significant. The paper thus does not help too much with the main problem: which sugar gum to use? The main brands all are mixtures of different sweeteners and sugar alcohols, so it is really hard to say. Probably one has to test oneself by eating several of them in short time and mesuring blood glucose (negative reaction indicates insulin secretion).

I have gotten this a few times because there is something in conventional chewing gums that give me debilitating stomach pains. This is just the gum base. It has almost a pine taste to it, but it is subtle. I have thought about adding my own flavored stevia drops and/or mint extracts to it, but so far I have chewed it plain. It is interesting because you can set it down and pick it back up later and it is the same texture. It is hard and crunchy at first, but once you chew it a few times it gets softer. It is not as soft as conventional chewing gum, more work for your jaw. I learned about this from Ben Greenfield, the biohacker.

Note that I am diabetic and so have a blood sugar meter and can test the effect of sugar alternatives by putting some in my mouth and measuring the blood sugar rise. So I conducted the experiment. My results after sticking 1Tbsp in my mouth and measuring over 2 hr period:

Erythritol zero effect
Xylitol raised blood sugar 10-20 pts
Sorbitol raised blood sugar 30 - 40 pts
Maltitol and the remainder of sugar alcohols were off the charts, most as bad as glucose or sucrose.

I am doing a keto diet and the lowest glycemic gum I can find is xylitol based. I can’t find any erythritol gum. I am going to search for stevia or monk fruit gum, but if someone has a recommendation I’d very much appreciate it.

Despite doing strict keto, my strips are only showing small to moderate ketosis and I believe the xylitol gum may be part of the problem.

Note that most of the major sugarless brands use sorbitol, or even worse mannitol or maltitol, sometimes in combination with xylitol. I believe the major brands are not compatible with a keto diet. My two cents.

Interesting
Just out of curiosity, would you mind doing test on sugar free trident? ( sorbitol/xylitol mix )
If not, it’s ok😄
Thank you for sharing!

(KetoMike) #32

Well I’ve already tested both sugars, and xylitol raises blood sugar a small but measurable amount, and sorbitol raises it about double what xylitol does. I avoid trident and the major brands, and chew xylichew or Spry. But I think those are inhibiting my ketosis even. Different people apparently respond to xylitol differently, I was reading on another board it knocks some out of ketosis and others not.

I would avoid trident and all major brands.

P.S. a stick or two per day probably wouldn’t matter. I tend to chew 6 pieces per day and so it’s adding up for me. I like the taste of something, I am also doing intermittent fasting so the gum helps the mouth stay busy.

(Troy) #34

6?:flushed:
I chew that many in one sitting

Thank you again @xKetoMikex
Have a great weekend

(KetoMike) #35

I cut down to 6 after not seeing the ketosis I wanted  I was chewing 15 - 18 before. You have a nice weekend too.

It’s my understanding that you should not read too much into the relative “amount” of ketosis registered in strips, because hydration (+ or -) can greatly affect it. Rather, if you see any elevation of ketones beyond negative, you’re in ketosis.

I spent much of September-December of last year in ketosis, lost 25 pounds and typically my strips read “slight” elevation, because I also typically hydrate well.

FWIW . . .

(KetoMike) #37

That’s good info, thank you. I have noted that my strips tend to lighten up after eatng xylitol gum. I’m still testing to verify.

Unfortunately for me, despite showing solid ketones nearly all the time, I haven’t lost even 1 lb over that same period as you. Getting a bit frustrated. I have added some muscle at the gym but even so I’d expect to lose weight.

(John Jaeckel) #38

Wow, well, hats off to you for the work you’re putting in, regardless, and adding muscle is pretty much always a good thing. My wife is “pre-diabetic” and on metformin and she has similar struggles as those you describe. It’s tough.

Like some others in the thread above, other than some gastric distress, sugar alcohols generally don’t affect me adversely or boot me out of ketosis. One thing I have noticed helps me get into ketosis quickly (after a cheat day) and stay there is distance running, or distance running/walking for like an hour or more at a time, in addition to my weight work.

FWIW . . .

(KetoMike) #39

Good points. I have cut down my xylitol gum chewing to 6 pieces per day in two sessions and am solidly in ketosis lately per the strips. I switched to eating window of 10 am - 4 pm from 4pm - 10 pm with some 24 hour fasts 1-2X per week. Still haven’t lost weight but I’m in ketosis and hitting gym so hoping for the best. Blood sugar is way down lately so that’s great.

I ate low carb for 10 years prior to going full keto so I think my body is gonna take time to start burning fat from the belly.

Tell your wife to keep at it and mix in some fasting, it isn’t that hard especially on Keto as you just don’t feel as hungry when you mostly eat fat. As I mentioned I had fasting sugar levels below 100 for first time in a long time recently partly from fasting partly from keto.
