Cheat meal?

(Chelsea Barnett) #1

I’ve been hardcore keto for like a month now. I’m happy with my results. Never considered a cheat meal until now. I’m not even hungry but I’m at the hospital with my son bc he is in surgery. It’s not a major surgery and I know he will be okay but I want some comfort food. Sitting here waiting is working my nerves and giving me anxiety. Is it too early for a cheat meal. Or will a cheat meal kick me out of ketosis. Or will I gain weight from one meal?
Help?!??!

No chance of something fairly keto? Eggs? Tuna salad? Salad? Chicken breast? Sausage? Not sure whether you’re thinking hospital cafeteria or something else. Or, would just a sugar-free drink of some kind help? Hot tea? Coffee? Ice water?

Even if you can’t make it keto, do the best you can with what you have to work with. And if you have to go high carb, just make it a small portion, not the super-size. Less to feel bad about later.

Good luck!

There is low carb food here but I want carbs. I want pizza or fries or some comfort food. I’m so upset. But I don’t wanna lose progress. I hate this. I haven’t gotten anything yet but uh

get out for a walk… grab a coffee… and don’t eat shit.

Its not the end of the world if you eat something non keto. I understand needing that comfort from time to time, if you decided to eat something non keto don’t beat yourself over it just get right back on.

I’m familiar with the occasional strong craving for carby food. I recently had a craving for pizza that persisted for well over a week and was distracting. I finally made a pork-rind crust following one of the popular recipes, and topped it with pizza sauce, pepperoni, and cheese. Did it taste just like pizza? Nope. But my craving has gone away and stayed away. Same happened for Indian food and even though I thought I was craving naan, I eventually made a keto butter chicken recipe on this site, ate it straight without naan or rice, and the craving went away. I find cravings are usually not dependent on the carby part of the food, but rather the seasonings, the overall flavor of something. So maybe try a keto substitute for the pizza? You might not crave the carby version afterward. If the craving is still there you can always indulge in the real thing.

Well I caved in. I am mad at myself but I knew I would be but I did it anyway. I did choose chicken tenders. Which were 23g for 3. And I ate 3. I think that’s a better choice than the pizza that was like almost 50 carb per slice. Going to just move forward and maybe if I don’t eat anything else today then I won’t kick myself out of ketosis?

Don’t even sweat ketosis, you don’t lose anything by not being in it for a few hours.

Yes, a cheat meal is suboptimal, and it’s not cheating because it doesn’t generally get you ahead…but it’s one snack at a very stressful time when your kid is in surgery…I allow this. You’ll be fine. KCKO.

Thanks. I have decided that I’m not going to beat myself up over it and just try to fast may be all day tomorrow and exercise atleast an hour

(Chelsea Barnett) #11

This makes sense! Thanks for sharing. I don’t feel as bad anymore. I can start over now and keep calm and keto on hehe

(Chelsea Barnett) #12

I know it may be too soon to tell but I don’t think I’m out of ketosis. I had been stuck at 169 for 4 days now and I weighed this morning and I’m at 167! Can someone explain this?

(Brian) #13

Keto on, Chelsea. You’re fine. Don’t beat yourself up, not even a little bit. And if you want to fast for a day or exercise a little extra, that’s fine, BUT, you needn’t punish yourself for having those chicken tenders either. Higher carb days are a part of life. Roll with it and consider it normal.

Personally, I’d keto on as if nothing out of the ordinary had happened at all.

Weight fluctuates all the time and it’s a terrible indicator on its own of fat loss. You need other factors like waist size and bodyfat %, otherwise you have no idea if what you gained or loss was fat, muscle, bone, poop, or water.

(Chelsea Barnett) #15

True. I need to take measurements and measure body fat % I just don’t want to order one of those things. Do you know of anywhere you can go to get body fat % measured. Like gyms?

(Chris) #16

You can get an impedence test at the gym but it can be wildly inaccurate. Best bet is to try to get a DEXA scan done, but that can be expensive. You’ll get real results that way.

Better option to be on the cheap side would be to pick up a caliper from Amazon, AccuMeasure sells one for 10 bucks that’s the gold standard. Not as accurate as a DEXA, but if you take measurements from the same spots over and over you can at least get some kind of trend data. I have one, and it’s great. There’s also a guide for men and women to take the millimeter measurement and convert it to BF%.

(Chelsea Barnett) #17

I feel like I was reading a different language haha. But thanks I’m going to look into all of that. My little brother is big on fitness. I asked him and he said the gym he works at doesn’t do either of those. So I’ll look into orderin that thing on Amazon and have someone help me do it. I’m assuming it comes with instructions ?

(Chelsea Barnett) #18

At the very least I will atleast take measurements and compare those monthly ?

(Chris) #19

Yep, comes with instructions and actually there’s youtube videos!
