Only a select few places near me selling ghee. Looking online, I found Tesco is cheapest at £7.50/kg, but we don’t have one locally. There’s a local Asian shop about 10 miles away, but I’ve yet to try them. Anyone know of other sources?
Cheapest ghee in the UK?
Only cheaper alternative would be buy butter and make your own I guess… I get butter from M&S of all places at £1.50 per 250g pack so £6 per kilo…
Edit to add Tesco is very cheap for the East End,… in Asda its £9 per kilo… watch out for something called “Better Ghee” though its £4 a kilo but made of palm oil… yuck!
Yeah, I picked up a jar of the Better Ghee thinking to save some cash, read the label and put it straight back down.
Same here! M&S butter is cheapest! (plus my mum works there…staff discount!)
If you plan on using a lot of ghee, Asian shops can be cheaper, you can get 2 - 5kgs tins.
to be honest I’ve never made it myself but it looks really easy when you watch the videos… I just use butter or goose fat for cooking…
Ah ok, I’m going to make some at the weekend - I keep reading that it goes really salty when it’s made with salted butter…but I quite like the idea of that!!
I tend to eat salted butter dipped in sea salt so that sounds good to me too!
Its really easy to make your own, I have a cast iron grillplate that sits on the stove burner so I put my pot on that with the gas on low. Chuck in the butter and leave it to slow cook for a hour plus, then skim off the foam and leave for a while longer, skim as needed and I like to let it get to a nice amber colour befor straining though a fine mesh strainer. Usally find 3-4 hours works well.
If using higher temperature, you would probably need to keep more of an eye on it.
