So what is this? Usually I slept from midnight until 6 am. If I went to bed at 1am I woke up at 7. It was always 6 hours and basically it wasnt enough. Now I have been on keto for 6 weeks and I am feeling great. So since maybe one week, I have seen a change in my sleep patterns. If I go to bed at midnight, I am awake at 4 am, I toss and turn for maybe 1-2 hours. I knock books off the bed! ( Yeah- I sleep with a lot of books on the bed, but this has never happened before…) And then I usually fall back to sleep around 6 and sleep until 9 or today is a real landmark- I slept until 10 am!!! ( Not that my dog was happy about it…he sleeps in his crate and he shit in it.) So with a pause during the night, I am getting 8 hours of sleep now. But I don’t get the sleeplessness at 4 am. I dont have to pee. I am just somehow restless. I could get up but I know that 4 hours of sleep will ruin my day and I will be shattered later. But then, I fall back to sleep and that lasts for hours! I think the last time I slept until 10 am was like 20 years ago. Can anybody relate? Whats with this insomnia window at 4 am?
Change in sleep habits
I read you! On keto for 2 weeks, 20 carbs a day. Great results but feel like a light electrical current running threw my body. This creates a restlessness at night! Especially the last 3 nights. I believe it ends after we normalized. Have others experienced this?
@Janketo
Thx for your reply. Yes- restless at night. Weird eh?
Yeah - I too am waiting for others who can relate?
I just posted about this on another thread. About four of us reported the same thing starting with one person. I have been an insomniac for years but recently the last two months (been KETO for 16 months) it’s gotten worse. New Years Eve I was pretty drunk and went to bed at 3am, up at 6am. I was waking with the sun during the summer and started sleeping longer as it got light later, but the last few weeks have been waking around 4am most days. Two nights ago I went to bed at 11pm and awake at 1:30am for an hour or so, I took an Ambien and managed two more hours. If you’re just new to KETO you may be getting more sensitive to caffeine, happens to a lot of us. I had to cut back after a couple of weeks because it really made me jittery. Gave up afternoon coffee for many months and now I fall asleep in the afternoon sometimes, I call it sleep diving. Where you start to pass out and suddenly wake over and over. So I brought back coffee again in the afternoon which gets me through but may be working against me later on at bedtime. it’s tough to figure out a good solution for me.
Maybe you don’t know, alcohol will disrupt your sleep big time. I don’t know the science, but it causes insomnia galore.
@DavyKOTWF
Yeah, most people think alcoholic a depressant. It is really just the opposite. First it lulls you and after 2 hours it wakes you up.
@David_Stilley
I have been caffeine sensitive since I was 35. I would be awake all night if I had a coffee past 2pm. Changed to lots of decaf. But nowadays I will have a regular coffee in the mornings, and decaf later in the day. Maybe I have to stop doing that one cup of regular coffee for breakfast, now the I am keto. Might be too sensitive even for that now? Thanks for the information. I did not know that keto could make us more sensitive to caffeine.
All sorts of magic is happening, it seems.
Oh and is your bedroom darkened? I have a curtain that is thick and especially made for the purpose to make my bedroom dark. Otherwise the daylight would definitely get me up early.
I rarely drink alcohol but usually if I do and I stay hydrated before bed I sleep solid. Not a normal thing at all. My girlfriend was a big drinker and she had no trouble getting 9-10 hours, I think it’s different for different people. There is the old time tradition of the nightcap. I tried it a 2-3 times several months back, just a shot of whiskey and thought I got to sleep easier, but I stopped because I was doing IF and decided that’s not a compatible thing. I have read it reduces your morning glucose spike and I think that’s what made me try it.
Pretty much, I leave a very dim nightlight lit (tiny dollar store L.E.D.) because I am an amputee and on the rare occasion get out of bed in the middle of the night to pee. But not often anymore because KETO has fixed my enlarged prostate gland. And I am waking several hours before sunrise now which is closer to 7am.
