Cellular Senescence: cancer and aging

(Steve Stephenson) #1

An interesting podcast episode from The Guardian:

Senescence cells secrete factors that attract immune cells to destroy small tumors. But senescence cells build up overtime and aggravate age related diseases.

[Does fasting induced autophagy and apoptosis destroy senescence cells?]

Flushing senescence cells from the body is showing promise as a treatment for a whole range of age related diseases, including fatty liver disease.

[Fatty liver disease is easily cured with keto lifestyle, so does keto lifestyle get rid of excess senescence cells?]

Senescence and Autophagy are apparently deeply intertwined.

ooh, science, thanks for the links!

I haven’t listened to the whole thing but for those of you who like going deep into the science: here’s a video interview about autophagy and senescent cells - Rhonda Patrick interviewing Guido Kroemer

Does autophagy cut the other way though, with regard to other cancers? E.g., https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5334363/

It looks like it can cut the other way. Fucking cancer cells are devious.

ETA: the video above actually addresses this @ minute 44 (haven’t heard that part yet but I saw the main notes).
