Catching [caught!] a Cold

(Mark H) #1

Being four months in on keto and I had been feeling, if not immortal, then at least that I would have good immunity. I’m faithful to the regime and supplement with kefir and iodine and some biocare maleforte. Then at the end of last week there was that tell-tale tickly throat which over the next few days came out as a fairly heavy head cold. I’ve been basically fasting for 2-3 days and knocking back goodly amounts of vitamin c, echinacea and extra magnesium (have ordered some more zinc which should also help). Anyway either this is a post to suggest others should not be as naive as me and accept that keto is not a superpower per se - or - maybe I’m missing some vital nutrient that left me open to this rotten little virus…

Cheers, M

I’ve been rough all week, but I tell myself it would probably have been worse

I’ve had one very minor cold in the last 12 months of keto. My family have had 4 or 5, just like I would normally have had. I’ll count that as a win.

No one is infallible. In the winter (flu season), I’m more conscience of proper hand washing and not touching my face! I’ve only had one cold this year and it was a head cold that started to move into my chest but never settled in to become full blown bronchitis, which would have been the norm for me. I also supplement with iodine and I think that has helped my immunity.

Try sniffing some eucalyptus essential oil, or adding a few drops to a hot epsom salt bath. Freshly grated ginger tea works wonders too. Hope you feel better soon.

I caught a cold back in October. It was not pleasant, but the good news is that it ran its course and didn’t linger. I do believe that keto has strengthened my immune system, but I know it doesn’t make us invulnerable. Unfortunately.

I had the flu very soon after starting keto 8 months ago and I fasted through it too. Since then I seem to have sailed through the flu season (i’m In Australia) with everyone around me sneezing and coughing around me - no idea if keto but feel less run down and so perhaps stronger. Fasting when sick was amazing and will definitely do again

Nearly thru it now, mainly fasting and sleeping and i suspect that I could have eased things by taking Vitamin D once summer was over (listed to a great podcast from clive de carle who points out the myth of the “flu season” - mainly just that the sun has gone and we’re not getting Vit D!)
