Cashews

#1

I was going to ask this in the recipe section but being new, can raise the question.

I’ve been making and eating a cashew chicken recipe that I love ( http://www.dukantoucan.com/easy-cashew-chicken-recipe-video-keto-asian-takeout-low-carb-chicken-recipes/ ) but recently read on a forum/blog that Cashew shouldn’t be included in a keto diet. Is that true? Have I failed at the earlier stages?

Thanks in advance…

You can include cashews in a keto diet if you want, it just may cause some issues for you. Cashews are decently low in carbs, but they still have some and can be a bit addictive causing you to eat extra. Some sources suggest they can have some other apsects to them that can be problematic.

But, in the end, i used to eat a good amount of cashews and stay in ketosis and do fine. I don’t eat so many anymore though. It’s possible to have them either way and be keto just fine.

Cashews are carby for nuts. 8g net carb to the ounce.

Compare to Almonds. 2.5g net carb to the ounce.

Mac Nuts go 1.5g net to the ounce.

Pecans 1.2g net to the ounce.

There are a lot of better nuts for keto.

I threw it into MFP, and it comes up at 8g per serving for the recipe. The Keto Connect folks have in in MFP as well with a lower carb count. It makes me suspect everything else they do. Which is a a shame.

The top three carb items in the recipe are cashews (8 total), Bell pepper (6 total) and Onion (5 total). By switching the cashews with pretty much any other nut, you can reduce this from an 8g/serve to a 5g/serve, easy.
