Carbs Seafood?

(Vic) #1

I believe somone said in the past we don’t need to count carbs in seafood like scallops and crab

I cannot remember why its different then say carbs in cheese or eggs

I do know I have not felt different on days I have crab or scallops though not sure that means anything

(You've tried everything else; why not try bacon?) #2

Well, on a zero-carb/carnivore diet, the carbohydrate content of meat and seafood is so small that it can be ignored. The point is to avoid plants and stick to animal foods, and any incidental glycogen is not a concern.

As far as a ketogenic diet is concerned, I just checked various types of crab in the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s database, and the amount of carbohydrate per 100 g of crab is minuscule (0.04 g). There is considerably more carbohydrate in scallops, apparently (2-3 g/100 g), but are you really going to be eating a kilo of scallops, that you need to worry?

If it is a concern to you, simply count the carbohydrate as part of your daily limit, just as you would any other carbohydrate.

I can’t get enough of shellfish and seafood in general present, even the pickled kind.

It was the coastal stay in the Spanish Costa Blanca did it to me…spoilt for choice.
Although I suspect quite a lot of the produce on offer came from own country’s fishing waters…

Yeah, all seafood (fresh water fish aren’t bad either), down the hatch without counting carbs, but avoid if high in mercury or other pollutants.

I can get enough shellfish and seafood and eat a wide variety regularly. The amount of carbs is low enough to be negligible.

I don’t see why it would be different. I don’t care about animal carbs at all as they feel fine and nothing like plant carbs…
But I would need some serious effort to go very high with animal carbs without milk  I just stop around 20g on carnivore then (no seafood, we don’t have much variety and it’s expensive but I like eggs, dairy and liver) and of course, often way earlier. And that’s low enough for me, surely it’s not the same for everyone, many should be careful with dairy but carbs from the rest shouldn’t case significant problems I suppose… Maybe for some as it’s hard to find something that is the same for everyone…

For no particular reason, apart from a reflection of my fondness of pickled mussels and other tinned seafood:

They’re good, healthy, tasty, and keto.
I lost a ton of weight doing 2MAD with these.
Using a jar or tin for brunch, then eating as much keto steak etc. at night as required.

I would recommend.
I don’t eat so much tinned tuna steak; but tinned wild red pacific salmon with some mayonnaise, yes…brunch sorted, especially with some blanched pickled garlic cloves and peppers.

And I normally get the tinned (anything) mackerel with the bones & skin, for the nutrients…but these were on offer.

There is an app called “Track”, you can download this app to your mobile phone and use it to know how much carbs each food contains if you really concern the carbs in seafood, as the others said, it can be ignored.

yet this is not what I am seeing people are not saying it can be ignored, its like its insinuated but then said not really

whatever I counted it, I had 8 large scallops today 8 carbs plus the rest of the dressings another 2 so 10 carbs luckily toady I could spare it

after I finish this package probably wont get scallops again

Oysters will probably be more of a problem but love them and crab so much conflicting info on how to know how much carbs in crab

As I learned in this forum, many people do keto without counting the carbs after their bodies adapted. As many people believe that the key point is that you need to feed your body with enough fat, because your fat-adapted body will choose to burn fat rather than carbs, of course you can’t eat too much carbs to tempt your body use it. I’m not a scientist, I don’t know if such thought is right, I have no idea if there is such scientific study on this topic, but I am the one not counting carbs, and I have been always feeling good and no craving for carbs, I don’t know if I have been always in ketosis since I didn’t measure it for months, but all the symptoms told me that I was in ketosis.

well this is my second time around with it, the first time I lost about 130 Lbs, when I came off slowly and I was able to maintain slowly adding carbs up to about 100 carbs per day, once I went over that I started to gain over 150 and gaining quickly

both before and now I find its easier (still a bit of effort) for me to lose weight under 15 carbs per day though I dont think seafood carbs ever effected me, but if I am over 15 carbs I don’t seem to lose very easily

If I am under 10 carbs its really easy very little effort

I know shrimp and mussels have carbs, but what other seafood has carbs?

The amounts are pretty small, really. And the protein is high.

(Vic) #12

I know the large scallops I had last night are about a carb each and I had 8

I know I oysters have a bit that climb fairly fast

Now sure how to get accurate info on crabs I find info online is all over the road on that

Also remember that “imitation” crab is hardly seafood and nearly always has sugar and wheat starch in it.

I forgot about scallops, probably because I always think of them as being difficult to cook: if cooked correctly, they’re great; overcooked, and they’re leather. Liver to me was the same way, until I figured out how to cook it.

Scallops are great!

Really sweet and melty texture if not overcooked…a great compliment to crispy bacon which a nearby pub to me serves.
