Carbs and carnivore

(Steve) #1

I have been doing mostly carnivore. My teenage daughter is making supper and asked to please eat what she is going to make (surprise , she is 16). I know it will be overb20 carbs . My question is if I eat 40 carbs and get out of ketosis will it take the same time tonget back in as if I eat 80gtams of carbs . She hasn’t asked me once to break it since I started

How long do yo think it will take your body to burn 160 calories? Not very long. The suspension of Lipolysis will be very short, probably without noticable effects.

(Steve) #3

Thanks , I am going to try and be as good as possible but don’t know if potatoes rice pasta etc

#4

your mostly carnivore but you are still eating some carbs from plants every now and then? if yes then upping it a bit isn’t gonna nail ya to the wall on this one meal from your daughter. But like you said, be wary of your portion amts and just oogle and AHHH over it and all the praise on her meal but just eat very little of it

I don’t think it should cause you much harm in any way.

You should decide what to do… I can’t possibly know what carbs do to your body and what are your priorities.
I don’t care much about ketosis but 40g can’t get me out of it. I want to feel my best.
40g may or may not cause problems, it depends on the person, the food and surely other factors as well.
40g is super tiny if it’s a starchy food… But if you eat much carbs, you still can get into ketosis in a few days again. So if it’s rare, it’s important for you and you know that you will feel just fine (or want to experiment)… It’s still up to you but that’s not the case when one falls off the wagon all the time and suffers. You won’t be in ketosis for a little while very rarely? I don’t see this a particular problem and it seems, you are similar so do what you feel you should.

I ate some carbs, ~100 g, on Thanksgiving and my blood sugar spiked up to 99 mg/dL an hour later. Not bad considering my fasting blood sugar was 115 before I went keto. To keep my blood sugar down I fasted until dinner and took our dog for a long walk before the meal and then cleared the table, put away leftovers and did some dishes after the meal for an excuse to be active. I didn’t notice any adverse effects at all and felt great the next day.

Thanks just was worried I might take a couple weeks to get into ketosis again

#8

We go into ketosis when our livers run out of glycogen, they don’t hold a whole lot to begin with and even 100g wouldn’t last a day in most people! People REALLY over think that one. I thank lots of crappy pee sticks for that.

(Jack Bennett) #9

It definitely won’t take weeks. Most people will utilize ~500-600 kcal of glucose daily if it’s available. So that suggests you would go through about 20 kcal/h or 5 g/h in glucose.

As a rough estimate, that would suggest 8h to burn through 40g of glucose and 16h to burn through 80g of glucose. There might be some fat storage as well (de novo lipogenesis), so that would change these numbers also.

(You've tried everything else; why not try bacon?) #10

De novo lipogenesis occurs in the liver only when it is overwhelmed with ethanol, fructose, or branched-chain amino acids. Stay away from those, and a little extra glucose (carbohydrate) in the diet is not going to be too problematic, except for possibly raising serum glucose and, hence, insulin. So the effects to be worried about would more likely be some damage from advanced glycation end-products and some systemic inflammation.

@Steve12 Your daughter is a lucky 16 year old.

To have her father willing to put aside his preferred eating habits to make her feel loved and valued by her Dad is a gift she won’t forget. :two_hearts:

You’ll be fine. Bon appetit!

(Steve) #12

Thanks eating in 30 minutes . And she made my favorite . It’s my Shepard’s pie. Ground beef and spices, mashed potatoes and cream corn . It smells so good. I feel like a lucky dad Amy daughter hasn’t complained about my new eating habits and wanting to make me something special

(Laurie) #13

How lovely of her to make something nice just for you.

#14

give her a challenge.

buy a keto cookbook and tell her to WOW you  I bet she would love to go there and cook new recipes for you and all being keto related…might be something she likes?

(Steve) #15

Thanks , I woke up this morning and weighed myself and was up 3lbs. Was a little surprised it was that much , ghee Ed n an hour after did a ketomojo test and my reading was 1.1 . Didn’t think it would be that high but was happy with that

It’s fine, it’s surely mostly water. It will goes down again.
It took me years not to gain anything after eating a lot of carbs but my weight was always surprisingly stable on the same woe. It’s human to have bodyweight fluctuations, it’s almost always water, sometimes more waste than previously… It can be even more than 3lbs without changing your woe. You need massive overeating for days to have some chance to gain a measurable amount of fat. And that is what matters, fat gain, not water gain. (Except if your body retain an unpleasantly big amount of water, that’s not healthy. Unpleasantly as feeling, seeing, not a bigger number on a scale, that’s not important.)

#17

yea you are fine, water but key here is do not continue that trend of carbs cause if we all do, that UP you have won’t leave ya easily…right now you will drop that super fast, but if we go that tad farther, omg then we got worries that annoy us LOL
Came thru good…research a great keto cookbook for her and get it, hey healthy eating recipes are a good thing

You’ll be right Steve. Your 16 year old daughter is cooking you dinner. In my world that is bluddy amazing. Congratulations and enjoy it.

(Steve) #19

I did , next year university if school
Stays open . I was guessing water and waste . It was a treat no really carbs in months . Don’t miss the carbs. Thanks all and the one one thing I have found it eating junk at night was more a habit or bored than hunger . Still get that sometimes but much better . It’s harder as stuck in house with covid so harder to keep busy . Gym visits have to be made by appt and my usually time 7:30pm to 9pm is always first time book then 6-7:30
