Hello everyone. Looking for help regarding introducing carbs after being keto for 11 weeks.
I am an athlete and have a job interview/trial coming up in 6 days time. Lots of running intervals, yoyo/bleep test etc, probably around 8km per day split over 2 workouts. How do I introduce carbs to get the best energy? My workouts have been suffering lately with low energy so looking for a big energy boost for my big few days. Thanks
Carb Loading?
If you were feeling fat-adapted, I’d tell you not to carb-load, but since you are still stuck in between, you are probably on the right track. The advice I see on the forum is to reintroduce carbs a few days in advance, so you are not caught by any ill effects on the day. I don’t have much personal experience to share, unfortunately.
Obviously, if an athlete responds, take his or her advice over mine.
Hi @Ketokid – Agreeing with @PaulL - get a head start and introduce the carbs at least a few days early (or earlier, like maybe now). Problem is you don’t have time to experiment to see what works and to try to peak.
If your athletic performance is key to your success in your job interview (are you a pro athlete?), then I’d make Keto adherence a low priority. If you are like me, you’ll find that reintroducing carbs after a period of Keto will bring on much higher performance.
So, if I had to make a recommendation based on limited information, I’d start eating carbs now to get over any stomach issues, top off your glycogen stores, and go into your trials completely rested and recovered. (works pretty well for Chris Froome – see article below on how he reintroduces carbs during competition).
