Carb goals vs fat goals and so many newbie questions

(Samantha ) #1

Hey, today was my first day of trying this lifestyle! I went over my carbs and still have like 40 grams of fat left. I want to meet my fat goal but am afraid the only way to do this will also just add to my already high carb goal! What is recommended at this point? I also have a lot more questions after this one :joy:

Very simple…
Low carb (like under 20 grams)
Moderate protein
And eat fat to satiety

Not sure what you mean by 40 grams left on fat…how did you come up with that? If you eat fat to satiety, there is no number target

if you aren’t hungry don’t eat
no need to ā€œmeetā€ your macros…don’t worry too much about going over your first day, you’ll get the hang of it

Thanks! I calcualted how many grams of protein I should eat, carbs and fat. Is that not normal?

Next question, I am going on vacation in about a week. Is it pointless to start the keto diet if I plan on eating carbs on vacation? Will I see any benefits if I try it for a week but then stop for a few days. I’m just trying to get the hang of it mostly but I don’t want to end up gaining weight. Opinions?

Carbs are a limit, protein is a goal, fat is the rest. You don’t try to reach the fat number, you can just go up to that amount.

If you do it for a week you won’t get adapted and a few days of carbs will probably lose your gains. If you can’t keto on vacation don’t start until you get back IMO

For many of us keto is a lifestyle, we eat keto on vacations, holidays, and birthdays. It only works well if you stick to it. If I gave myself permission to eat carbs on special occasions, there would be a reason for every day to be special and I would never stick to keto. Once your body adapts to burning fat, you’ll feel like crap if you eat carbs.

I’d suggest you begin a transition towards keto that you can sustain on vacation such as eliminating/minimizing anything with sugars, flours and high starch like potatoes. This is unlikely to be enough to get you into ketosis, but it will lower insulin and should make it easy to transition into a stricter keto diet when you return.

Splurging on vacation would ruin my vacation, too much bathroom time! And a sick, bloated, lathargic feeling!
