Carb creep

I started ketoing mid-Decemberish and after keeping a tight reign on my carbs using MFP I thought to myself, “I got this! I don’t need to count this stuff anymore.” Fast forward three weeks and I wake up in a couple of mornings in a row and feel like crap. I’m groggy and still sleepy after getting up, I’m starting to have aches and pains and my stomach is NOT a happy camper!

I started looking back over my intake and discovered that I had been unconsciously letting a few extra carbs slip in here and there and it’d thrown me over whatever my limit for carbs happens to be. It must be really close to 20g because I really wasn’t overdoing them that hard but it was enough! I had let a carb creep in here and there and it had derailed my ketogenic metabolism… LESSON LEARNED!

What the keto?

Yes, same here. Makes me feel like a dumbass sometimes, but the real punishment comes from how I feel.

I think it’s probably harder for people who don’t have these reactions to stay on keto than those of us who feel worse when carbs creep in because we have a built-in punishment mechanism.

Oh well, we’ll KCKO!

This is a big fear for me – Carb creep!!

It didn’t take much…
an extra splash of cream in my coffee instead of measuring out EXACTLY 30ml
a spoonful of peanut butter when I forgot I’d already had a spoonful earlier that day
a couple of nuts too many because I wasn’t weighing them

:astonished: UGH!! that’s no bueno.

It was just a couple extra here and a few extra there and before you know it… I’m back to sugar burning and feeling like H-E-Double hockey sticks!

I think I need to pay more attention. I’ve stalled, and I seem hungrier, and I my mood isn’t as great. Time to focus!

Yep, I think my carbs have been creeping up a little too.
The good thing is I think I’m fat adapted enough that I’m not really feeling any bad effects (joint aches, hunger, etc), except maybe a little extra water weight, the scale stalls, & blood glucose creeps up some.
Some fasting, & refocusing on portion sizes, & going back to the food log helps me get back on track.

I have no idea how much I weigh! At the doc’s office a couple of months ago it was 230 lbs (started at a little over 255 lbs) but I don’t weigh myself. I’m not worried about my weight anymore. I just keep my eye on the prize- 33" waist Levi’s I haven’t worn in YEARS. I’ve already gone from 40" waist being tight to a 38" waist falling off if I don’t wear a belt cinched tight.
I’m sure I gained some weight when I flubbed up and let the carbs creep up on me. I know my wedding band was tighter for those few days around feeling like I’d been run over by a tractor! Now I’m being really strict again and the ring is back to becoming looser every week.

I just knew I would never have a problem with carb creep, but boy was I wrong! Yesterday was a double whammy. First, at lunch I bought some sunflower seeds that said they had 3.5 net carbs for the whole package. (1 carb per ounce and the package was 3.5 ounces.) I ate 2.5 ounces while I talked to a friend at lunch. So today while shopping, I decided to pick up some sunflower seeds, you know, since they were so low in net carbs. Imagine my surprise when the package at the store said 4 net carbs!

My second whammy was dinner and a byproduct of eating too much! I ate half the fathead pizza I made (it was freaking fantastic) and combined with everything else I ate yesterday definitely put me over my 20 carbs!

My lessons learned: Reduce the amount of nuts I’m eating. Double check all labels that seem too good to be true against an online counter.

I have no regrets eating half the Fathead pizza. Just sayin’
