Do any of you continue to desire alcohol, specifically, beer? I can’t seem to put it down.
Can't stop drinking beer
I never liked beer and don’t drink it, but I know lots of people love beer. I have a hard time stop drinking champagne. That is my drink of choice.
If you have a very hard time stopping, can you drink the lowest carb beer you can find?
Good luck.
As a daughter of an alcoholic…no judgement, just passing an idea - do you think you could be replacing carbs with alcohol?
I drink bourbon about every weekend, but need to cut back regardless of the carb count. I don’t have to tell you this (need to tell myself actually), but alcohol is probably the worst punishment you can do to the body.
Beer causes me to swell, retain water and feel absolutely horrendous! Looking back, beer did this to me in my college years too, so when I was out in my skin tight ‘rockies’, I’d forgo beer every time. Now, knowing the science and being more aware of my reaction to anything grain, I drink beer very rarely. That’s a shame, cause I love the taste and live near several wonderful craft beer breweries (including the nation’s only ‘farm to tap’ brewery).
Keto and similar way of eating choices really bring our food/substance issues and habits to the surface.
I used to drink a lot of beer, ( IPA ) but have since decided being in my best health has no place for alcohol.
But you may ask, " What about resveratrol and red wine? ".
From the link above:
Even if resveratrol were a miracle antioxidant, it probably wouldn’t matter, because our bodies transform it into other compounds within less than 30 minutes of entering our bloodstream.
Most importantly, alcohol is a proven pro-oxidant, and is toxic to humans. It doesn’t make sense to drink red wine, which is a toxic pro-oxidant, known to damage cells throughout the body, in order to (maybe) get (a little bit of) anti-oxidant benefit from resveratrol to (perhaps) reduce your risk of one single health problem—heart attacks.
Yes, I love beer. And I try to limit myself to 2 beers per week, when I meet the old codgers for lunch. If I have room for the carbs, i make them good craft beers. If I don’t it’s Ultra or Corona Light. It’s strange that I have been able to do that, because when my health issues became evident, I swore I would not give up alcohol. Have almost done it without really trying.
Alcohol is something we should use to enjoy. I like a good glass of red wine from time to time. But if one needs any form of alcohol daily, I would say that is a problem. It then is no longer for enjoyment but some sort of crutch. A keto diet could help to change that. I know my words are probably unpopular.
Your words are plenty popular with me. Although my normal dinner routine almost always includes a glass or two of red wine
Used to love a stout/dark beer with a heavy sandwich. Now that I’ve tossed the bread overboard (while still eating everything inside), the appeal of beer seems to have gone with it. Just lucky in terms of taste buds, I guess.
Where does the ’ we ’ come from?
I wouldn’t question your personal reasons, but would question you suggesting that it is a good thing for all of us.
IPA guy here. Laguanitas All Day IPA has 3.4 carbs per can. It is my go to. Dogfish and Carona also offer good choices but hard to find them at the local pubs. I have a couple and swith to vodka…
I never want to give up alcohol but it’s not like we need it (it’s a toxin, quite far from being needed) and I never drank much.
Going off keto is way more frequent in my life than drinking alcohol but I still drink alcohol on keto. Any kind I fancy or have. Drinking alcohol is where my skills as the Queen of Ridiculous Amounts really shine. I can drink the most sugary alcohol without it having a significant impact on my carb intake.
I need my SO for drinking beer as the smallest bottle/can is way too big for me, I focus on the stronger drinks, vodka, whisky… Even sugary wine is better as I need very little of them and they don’t spoil easily.
You can enjoy a lower-carb beer now and then if you want… As beer is usually too carby for me and it’s not needed at all, I easily got used to almost never drinking any or just in especially tiny amount. One can get used to so many things, I surprised myself a few times. But I always had weeks and sometimes months between drinking, I just used to drink way more beers in the summer.
@OldDog
What exactly are you questioning? I drink a glass of wine once a blue moon and when I do, I do it to enjoy it. I like the taste of a good Rioja. But that doesn’t mean I drink it every day.
Bill, I’m not much of a beer drinker, but I’ll pour 3 fingers of bourbon to go with a grilled steak, some chicken thighs, some burger patties, you get the idea.
It’s slowed down since I started keto from 4-5 days to maybe twice a month. It doesn’t help my cause any that my favorites are the hard to find!
I stopped drinking a few months ago. I really like(d) sweet, strong, and highly hoppy IPAs. Maybe some day I’ll drink them again.
I don’t find a basic, cheap beer like Budweiser or Coors to be worth it.
For now I’m comfortable abstaining.
don’t be sorry…it’s an interesting discussion! And there’s a whole spectrum of answers here about how people see this issue and how they respond in their own lives.
Take what you like, and leave the rest
Buffalo Trace
Eagle Rare

Blanton’s
Four Roses Small Batch
Woodford
Bunch of others, but that’s all I can think of off the top of my head.
