Can we be in ketosis after 5 days of keto ? Because I want to test my blood but maybe it’s not necessary right now, since it costs more than the urine test

Hi Bella.

I was in Ketosis after 4 days. Confirmed with urine test.

Yes, you can be in ketosis in a matter of days. Becoming fat adapted can take weeks to months.

Other things I notice when I’m in ketosis is funky smelling urine and constant taste in my mouth (to me it’s sweet, some say it’s metallic).

You can, and I wouldn’t bother testing - if you’re eating right, it’ll happen when it happens. Spend the money on good food.

Metabolically healthy folks can fall into ketosis within a few hours even after consuming a high carb meal. Severely deranged folks may not get into ketosis unless they stop eating for days. Only you (or your health provider) can determine the answer to your question as it pertains to you specifically.

For example, I can eat zero carb fat bombs and be driven out of ketosis. Conversely, I can eat a baked potato and remain in ketosis. These are extreme, but reproducible examples.

I’m firmly in the test frequently camp. If ketone testing is too expensive, just do blood glucose. It’s cheap and effective. Millions of diabetics manage their illness with it, so it’s certainly sufficient for those just trying to lose weight.

The most important number to focus on is the 20g carbs. Get a good app and be careful with everything.

Make sure you don’t have any hidden carbs - we all think, no, not me … but you’d be surprised (I suppose that’s why they’re called “hidden”). The rest will take care of itself.

Your weight checking week versus week, or month to month should be going down (daily figures are meaningless due to +/- water levels)
