Ironically, in most cases, the New World kept old English and missed the significant reforms of the Victorian era in the UK. A lot of US English is closer to old forms (especially with some regional elements from Devon & Essex since these areas sourced a lot of the “pilgrims” (zealots)), plus some later simplification to help the wide range of immigrants.
I didn’t know that… did we used to call trousers pants? I suppose they were originally pantaloons or something? I’ll have to stop being rude about American English

I think so, probably from the French (thanks William the Conker), then as we invented undergarments we differentiated pants from underpants with “trousers” and the Yanks didn’t. Probably bigger fans of going “commando”
As an expat Brit in the US for >20yrs, that still ranks with the classic funnies of “fanny” and “rubber”…
