Can COFFEE cause CRAVINGS?

(Thomi M) #1

Seriously. I just realized the reason I do better without coffee has nothing to do with the caffeine. If I drink coffee in the a.m. I crave food (not just carbs, but ALL food) all day long. No weight loss. Cut out coffee and I am fine. I just had a cup this afternoon after several days without it and am ranging around for food like a starving person. Is there any scientific basis for this? I will miss my coffee, but not the desperate need to eat.

Interesting. Caffeine is used in diet pills to depress hunger. What you are pointing out is the opposite. Do you put something in your coffee?

Are you adding sweetener? If you are that could be spiking your insulin and causing hunger.

No sweetener (yuck!), but I do use HWC. I use the cream in my black tea as well, though, and don’t have the same effect. I also think the coffee might have something to do with joint pain/fibromyalgia, but there are so many other uncontrollable factors there, like weather, that I can’t be sure. I used to think coffee suppressed my appetite, but have realized it is only a temporary thing, that the rest of the day I am craving.

Have my two cents !

Plain coffe from Starbucks versus your plain cofee made in tour own house.

The Starbucks will couse cravings 7times out of 10

BUT WHY ???

Coffee has never made me crave anything, in fact I can use it to suppress hunger. Gotta love caffeine.

May be psychological. Do you associate coffee with eating breakfast?

Way back when he first published, Dr. Atkins suggested that coffee could be a problem for many people, but I’m not one of them. I drink a lot of coffee (black) and, if anything, it helps control appetite.

But it may be different for others (as Dr. A suggested). We’re all different, and IMO, effective weight management involves learning how our own bodies function best.

I know a person or two who say that coffee puts them to sleep – do you have that reaction, too? I wonder if it just works backwards for you, sort of the way speed works backwards for people with ADHD. I dunno!

It could be a sensory or chemistry issue unique to you. Depending on how you’re “wired”. For example I have an autistic child with sensory processing disorder. Sensory processing disorder can effect anyone at all whether they have autism or not. My daughter has an opposite reaction to caffeine due to her SPD. it calms her, she can slow down and enjoy her day more. Allergy medications on the other hand, which are supposed to knock you out for most people make her incredibly active and she can’t sit still or sleep and it makes her very volatile until it’s out of her system.
It’s possible you just have sensory processing disorder to some degree

I drink decaf (unthinkable to some I’m sure lol) with single cream. I find it’s quite satiating. I agree it’s not quite the same as when I buy from a cafe. I have wondered if it’s because they always use skim or semi skim milk. For that reason I prefer to make my own.

Yeah I find coffee definitely causes cravings… for more coffee! :yum: :coffee:

Organic vs non organic coffee has profoundly different effects on hunger for me.
