This weekend I was visiting my parents and we had a carrot cake—store-bought and sugary—for my dad’s birthday. I had one small piece. This was the only thing outside of my regular eating for the weekend. A few hours later my abdomen felt totally bloated and I had the stinkiest farts I think I’ve ever had. By morning it was gone, but I’m assumong it was the sugar. Is this something anyone recognizes?
Can anyone tell me what happened?
If you’ve been keto for a while, your gut bacteria will have evolved to be more fat/fiber/protein aligned. When you eat something that’s not the norm, your microbiome has to adapt.
The microbiome is complex and some of the outputs of some bacteria become food for others… it’s like a natural ecosystem.
Your sugar excursion basically threw the ecosystem into chaos.
I used to have that all the time before I started keto.
Totally normal after being on a ketogenic woe for a time. It’s a self reinforcing feedback loop which reminds us why we quit the sad in the first place.
Could be the sugar made it down into the part of your gut it was never intended to be. Might also be some kind of gluten or grain sensitivity. Either way, cake == pain.
Totally this. I ate some honey-glazed ham a few months ago and it felt like my stomach was hosting a carnival, complete with firebreathers and ferris wheel. After a few hours, things settled down.
@CarlKeller… I would just like to say that you have been a huge motivation for me, you are so gentle and hilarious with all of your input, and you are my success idol. You encourage without discouraging! You continue to help me KCKO!
@Ketodrick…i think this happens to most of us, it used to bother me, now it just lets me know im doing something right…its my embarrassing little bodily notification
It could be the gluten. Eating keto is pretty much the same as going gluten free. Your body may have a gluten intolerance that you never noticed until you started keto.
That happens to me if I eat sugar or wheat flour since starting keto — to the point where I wake up the next day feeling bloated and hung over. On top of that, when I eat sugar either accidentally or because I had a moment of weakness, I break out in hives. So interesting how the body works.
