I have a heavy lifter friend who is into Crossfit. He’s never had a weight problem per se. I posted something on facebook about ‘fat doesn’t make you fat, insulin resistance does.’ (Borrowed from 2KD’s web page because I thought it was brilliant.) He gets into this really long diatribe about CICO and that’s the reason for weight gain, and how you lose weight, PERIOD. Like really old school, and no excuses allowed. He only knows basic information about insulin resistance according to him. If that was so, I would think he’d get the reason why CICO is not that simple.
So his other very pointed questions were in the line of ‘one has to ask what makes a person insulin resistance in the first place? What happened to make you insulin resistant?’ To me this indicates that he’s pointing to an out of control diet over years… i.e. it’s your own damn fault and you can’t blame insulin resistance. Because you caused the IR to begin with. My take on the carb issue, at least in MY own experience, is that carbs make me ravenously hungry and self-control goes out the window. And apparently, that has affected me all my life. Since I was 6. Always been a chubby kid, now an obese adult.
What say you, community? I don’t have a scientific, fact-based rebuttal. Is there an argument that can be postulated that the carbs basically take over your mind and you don’t have control, or am I weak minded and just didn’t have the self-control to keep my weight under control?
