I would recommend watching Dr Eric Berg on Youtube and also guys like Ken Berry and Dom D’Agostino. There are too many variables to put everyone in the same category.

Belly fat storage happens because you produce insulin and insulin is a storage hormone. There are a few things that can cause Insulin production, ill list them below:

  1. Eating sugary/starchy carbs.
  2. Raising stress levels which produces cortisol and other stress hormones. These stress hormones can kick you out of ketosis by causing the production of insulin via different metabolic pathways.
  3. You could have other hormone imbalances caused by adrenal fatigue, thyroid issues and other auto immune conditions. These all cause the body to get into fight or flight mode which again causes its own problems.

My advice is watch the guys i mention above. Look at the sympathetic and para-sympathetic nervous system and see what symptoms you may present. When you track it back to these you can address them independently and sort your insulin levels as an effect.

You’d be amazed how this sympathetic and para-sympathetic nervous system is linked to all the troubles in your life. I love learning about it now.

One thing is common in all fat storage (Insulin). You will find Insulin Growth Factor (IGF) is linked to most disease and mental health conditions. Theres not much that can’t be prevented or cured by Keto and the reason being its how our bodies are designed to work. Think of how our lives were before the hustle and bustle of modern day life (Caveman days).

Care to share exactly what you ate and specific portion sizes?

#111

Sure, now where did I put my notes…

What’ll it be then? Rib or chop? Loin or shank? – Bill the Butcher, (Daniel Day-Lewis) Gangs of New York - how is that already a 17 year old movie?

If we’re burning out own fat, that can make up a shortfall in daily calories, so I don’t see any necessary problem with eating fairly low calories. As an average, we can get ~31.5 calories each day, per pound of fat we have, a substantial source until we get really lean.

I don’t think we are trying to bust your chops. Just curious.

Your information is very interesting and good to hear.

I’m glad you previously spoke about “The Ketogenic Bible” that is a good book. Those guys are friends with Phinney and Volek, which many of us have read, and essential they’re all working on the same team. The more the merrier.

But yeah, that 10oz steak alone is 700+ Cals, so you must’ve had a shade more than 800 per day. (But who cares and as you say we aren’t counting calories … ). I understand you to mean nail carbs first, nail protein, then fat was variable but you were not guzzling it down. I did something similar actually.

Really interesting food ideas too. So thanks again.

Keto is great. Wish I did it 20 years earlier.

ketosis works with caloric restriction - it mimics fasting hormonally
fasting works through ketosis at caloric “elimination”
caloric restriction alone will cause muscle loss as well and that will reduce metabolic rate. That means you will consume a lot less food and still gain weight at the end.

note his distinction between “fasting” and “starvation”

(Empress of the Unexpected) #115

Ah, no - I’m ten months in and as hungry as ever. Breakfast, lunch and dinner. Now three string cheese slices.

#116

I’m sorry if I am just misreading your posts Regina, but it sounds like you are both saying you are hungry all the time and yet have a small appetite? 900 cal a day I think you said, and you fill up on fat? I am always hungry and thinking about food, do you just get full easy?

(Empress of the Unexpected) #118

Yes, it is counter intuitive, but I have been a small eater since I was a child. I say a small eater, maybe they are just normal portion sizes. When I go out to eat with my daughter, for instance, we order the small salad, which is still huge, and split it. I eat until I am full, but still am a three meal a day person. For instance, breakfast can be 6 strips of bacon, a salad, and a glass of almond milk That’s around 300 calories. I never really got the keto “oh gosh, I’m just not hungry anymore” feeling. I get fat from nuts, dressings, butter on vegetables at dinner.

Have you ever tried fasting? Intermittent or extended

#120

I wish I could be like that. I had gastroparesis once for a few years after anesthesia and couldn’t eat much more than a few bites and that was horrible, but now I feel like a bottomless pit.
Is it possible that calorie restricting makes you hungry? Whether or not intentional, if you have no body fat to pull from and you are exercising and calories are super low, could that make you hungry?

(Karim Wassef) #121

Here’s my experience: There is genuine hunger that happens once you’re fasting under 10%bf (for men- I think 14% bf for women) but it also varies by person. This is where the last fat reserves are being tapped and the body is actually in need.

Until then it’s “discomfort” or “emotional” hunger while fasting.

Calorie restriction (reducing all calories but still taking in carbs) though is not fasting. That hunger comes from insulin cycles that create a demand for glucose in the blood and if you’re not fat adapted, your body won’t make the glucose out of fat reserves fast enough. As you become fat adapted, that cycle gets softened. Unfortunately calorie restriction will stop fat adaptation and will instead consume muscle to gluconeogenesis - that slows your metabolism and food will cause you to gain weight faster in the future.

The experiment the government ran (first video above) with potatoes and starchy veggies on calorie restriction showed this insane “hunger” response and body wasting effect. Some subjects were caught digging through the dumpsters for food and eating it… I really recommend you watch that as a comparison to fasting. Calorie restriction is starvation and illicits horrible hunger.

Fasting or ketosis by contrast stops insulin cycling - stable blood sugar means that the body can adapt to fat and there’s plenty of that until the tank runs really low.

Dr Fung and Dr Bikman are both excellent resources for understanding the hormonal underpinnings here.

(Empress of the Unexpected) #123

It could be. But I have plenty of mid section fat to pull from. And I don’t want to eat to the point of feeling uncomfortable.

(Empress of the Unexpected) #124

This is a very interesting thread.

(Empress of the Unexpected) #125

I will post a breakdown.

(Wendy) #126

Regina, just a thought about the appetite, I was listening to Real Food Keto and was interested in the part about low stomach acid causing some of appetite and other intestinal issues. Food doesn’t digest right when the acid is too low.
Just thought of it when I was reading your post. Something to consider at least.

(Empress of the Unexpected) #127

That’s interesting. I have heard references to that. Is there a way to test for low stomach acid?

(Empress of the Unexpected) #128

I found this helpful. All my blood levels are good. I will try the baking soda test. Or maybe add some ACV before meals.
