Bummed out about Splenda

#1

Splenda has always been my favorite go-to sweetener when in doubt. But just got around to reading that awfully small fine print on that little <1 gram carb packet.

Not only does it have sucralose but dextrin and maltodextrin as well. Crap, another sweetener bites the dust. Kind of glad, though, because it was losing its allure and becoming more bitter to me.

Splenda now goes down with Stevia for me. Xylitol is also a scratch. Both yuckily bitter.

Only thing left maybe is erythotol — am finding Swerve is pretty good. I also like an occasional small squirt of Mio in my water.

You can buy pure liquid Splenda

Hate to say but best to wean off all of them and enjoy savory instead. JMHO they are all crap and if not known now will be known down the road, so place safe and not find out to late.

You straight sucralose, or Splenda zero. The packets do have dextrin in them

Some have great luck with monkfruit sweetener. You might want to try it out. I have only tried the maple flavored syrup, DH wanted something to add to his occasional oatmeal breakfast, it tasted fine to me.

Carl was mentioning Allulose in the latest podcast. I haven’t tried that one but he said he was using it a lot now.

I’ve tried Allulose. Tastes like sugar. Browns nicely when baking.
I’m less of a fan of monk fruit. Not very sweet and kind of fruity. But will work.
Dislike stevia.
Don’t like the cooling effect or graininess of Erythritol.
An amazing numbers of sweeteners out there now.

I love straight sucralose; it’s my favorite sweetener. I only use it in big recipes or a huge cup of coffee because a tiny bit goes a long way

Got some Splenda Zero liquid — no maltodextrin or dextrin. Zero carbs, cals and 0 protein.

Used two small squirts in my coffee with 1 Tblsp of HWC. Plenty sweet and very little bitterness. Just might do the trick.

Thanks for the obvious recommendation.

So to be clear since I am new, you can’t use splenda even if you stay under 20g carbs a day? Like if you use splenda in your coffee or drink a diet drink with splenda in it you should not do it at all? Where should most of the carbs come from?

Depends why you are doing keto.
If it is because of deranged metabolism you would be well advised to avoid sweeteners.
Israeli research showed awhile ago that there is an insulin response to sweet taste, regardless of where it comes from. Sorry I don’t have the reference to give you or the time to look for it now.
As for where to get your carbs, depends on your food tastes and health status.

There is one more option. How about none? Can you wean yourself off it somehow?

I thought coffee with no sugar was going to be impossible. Well it wasn’t. It just took some training …

Now merely the idea of those chemicals or severely mutilated natural ingredients puts me off.

It can be done.

I agree - fake is not the way to go.
The testing is done on you (well, they do some testing ahead of time to check you will not die, but your gut microbiome may really disagree with some of these chemical lab substances).

Not sure what is wrong with real sugar?

2 teaspoons is less than half your 20 grams of carbs - if it is not a habit, some dark chocolate, a half scoop of ice cream, a single piece of candy etc. (if it does not trigger anything - this you have to know for yourself) is a very safe and you might even discover, effective, way to have a small sweet item.

It exists naturally in a lot of fruit so, I think, given a very low dosage, you are not going to read about some unusual brain cancer side effect.

I used to drink 12 packs of Diet Coke - day in and day out - to have a sweet (and caffeine) fix but now, really wish I didn’t pass that crap through my organs.

Yeah, the only reason to put maltodextrin in the packets is to keep it powdery. If you like the taste of sucralose, go liquid…
