Pubs all over the UK are closing. It’s expensive to go out and with supermarkets selling booze at a fraction of the price people are choosing to drink at home instead. Just looking around my office, the beer belly is alive and well.
I’m “glad” it’s happening in London now, because then the politicians might actually take notice.
The English pub is actually an institution that I support (would like to support), even if I can no longer drink beer (or only rarely).
They are a social thing, and used to be a place where people met friends, or made new friends, or whatever.
I live in “the provinces” of England, quite different to London or any big city, and our country pubs have been closing for decades. We used to have so many that it’s taken a while to have a major impact, but it’s really impacting now. At one time, every village had at least one pub. Now, only a few villages have them. Sometimes they are kept open as community ventures, but that’s difficult to make a success.
I think the causes are many and varied, but I think the only thing that can save the pub in the long term is some kind of government intervention. I can think of a few things they could do, but I won’t bore you with them.
The pubs that do survive mostly do so by serving food, and many are very good at this. It’s usually hard to eat purely keto in pubs, but increasingly, you can persuade them to serve you a more keto version of one of their normal meals (get them to swap out the potatoes for more veg or salad, for example).
On that subject, I happen to have recently come across a lot of people who work for the NHS (National Health Service) in one capacity or another. Most of them clearly have been following NHS dietary guidelines, and unfortunately for them, it shows clearly around the waistline.
