Brain inflammation

#1

I suspect there may be something going on here with me.
Don’t know where to begin…
Does anyone have any suggestions?

Hi @Manson-
What are your symptoms?
Swelling of the brain is definitely far from normal- if you’ve been in any type of accident or have hit your head you should seek medical attention immediately.

Best,
Jen

Memory and cognitive issues. Brain fog and just a sense of their being something not quite right.
I have not had a head injury but many years ago I was sick and was placed on lots of meds for a period of time. I would say possibly that could contribute but who knows. Or maybe something in my diet like “bad fats”?? I do still buy commercial salad dressing. Ok it’s a shot in the dark but who knows? I did start to make my own salad dressing but then I realized I was using commercial mayonnaise.
I bought some healthy stuff from primal kitchen but haven’t used it yet.
Most foods with bad fats I’m not eating but I do love salads and eat them often.
I have begun to intermittent fast for the past few weeks but still building up to it.
Thought maybe that might help too and I ordered cat claw supplements of all things. I heard it could be helpful for inflammation too.
Some of the brain fog has improved with ketogenic diet but after 3 months I thought I would be more clear headed.

Studies have shown that being in a state of ketosis can improve cognitive function. For greatest benefit, therapeutic ketosis should be maintained, which is defined as blood ketones > 3 mmol.

Have you been achieving this with your “keto” diet? If not, start there.

Yes I am in ketosis. I started lowcarb eating early in August and then quickly went to ketogenic. I wasn’t sure if I was doing it right as I had keto flu for 6 weeks. Soooo I joined a ladies keto group in September and was guided into ketosis through diet. I began to feel better too once I was truly in ketosis and eating more fats. I thought I was eating enough fats but maybe not. Anyway I bought a blood ketone meter and am showing I am in ketosis. I usually am between.8 to 1.9 has been the highest.

6 weeks of keto flu, OUCH!!!

Your description makes me wonder if you’re missing something in the vitamin/mineral part of your diet that your body is not doing so well without.

You mention liking salads, that can be good or not so good depending upon what you put in them. What else does your typical diet include? Do you eat meats? Dairy? Eggs? Cheese? Non-starchy veggies? Beans? Fruits?

Are you taking any meds that might cause symptoms like you’re experiencing?

Maybe someone will be able to offer more meaningful suggestions as your information becomes a little more comprehensive.

I eat keto…fats, meat, keto dairy, nuts, veggies

Exercise is great for the brain.

When dealing with neurological issues, the degree of ketosis needs quite high. This might be a good application for exogenous ketones.

This graph was taken from The Ketogenic Bible by Drs. Wilson and Lowery:

But are you supplementing any electrolytes? How is your salt intake? I’ve had a feeling that my brain was “pulling away” from my skull but more water and salt made it feel better. Something similar?

When you get a handle on things and look for ways to improve… you may find that removing gluten containing foods, even when they fit in your macros or as a treat (the small tortilla, even if it’s just 5g isn’t worth it to me anymore) and replacing high Omega 6 vegetable oils with more real ones like making your own dressings will just help you feel a bit better.

If you’re new to this, it sounds like a lot, which is why I recommend it when you’re in it for a bit and looking to polish it up a little.

I do have mct. I’ve been drinking coffee with coconut oil
Would it be possible for mct oil to keep me awale?

#13

That’s a good idea. It’s a process for sure but necessary
if one wants to feel good.

I am supplementing with electrolytes daily. Mostly I take salt when I feel week. I feel ok today but I think I’ll take some anyway
