Bouncing back

So eating low carb is extremely easy for me. The only time i find my self eating high carb food is when its some sort of ethnic specialty i want to try. Last night around 8pm i had Taiyaki. Which is basically a giant carb ball shaped like a fish (online estimates show 80g carb).

When i got home at 11pm my urine tests showed no ketones. This morning roughly 11 hours later urine tests show that im almost at my usual level of morning urine ketones.

I was suprised because every time ive eaten carbs so far it took about 2 days to bounce back.

I know urine tests dont tell the whole story but i like them because its a sort of bio feed back thats encouraging to see.

Im happy. Have a great day.

It is great that you can get right back on track! Not all of us have the ability. I would not be so sure that you are back in ketosis as the urine strips only can tell you that you were in ketosis in the recent past but not that you are currently and of course, they can give false negatives because we tend to get very good at using ketones and don’t spill them into urine. Dehydration can also be a factor in that a concentrated sample might show darker results.

Just food for thought…

Yes but i tested last night at around 11:30pm and the tests came back negative. So i went from very high to zero. And then i tested this morning at 7am and they were only slightly below normal for me.

The normal pattern is that the test shows negative for about 2 days. But this time it dropped to negative and now im reading a positive only 11 hours later. This is not the same pattern.

Fung states that it only takes 2 tsp of sugar to raise insulin enough to stop ketosis, the body will always burn glucose first.

Your results are surprising (getting back into ketosis within 11 hours). What other variables are at play here? Did you work our hard the day of the meal (maybe the body stored the carbs leading to a quick lowering of blood stream glucose/insulin, creating an optimum environment for ketosis to resume?) or in the morning before you checked levels again.

As you admit, the urine strips are not considered to be the most reliable source but it’s something to go off of. Do you feel like you are in ketosis?

Yesterday i ate the carbs then spent about 2 hours sitting in a car. After that i ate some no carb jello and mackrel packed in olive oil.

I went home tested and got negative. The next morning i tested and got 1.5 (small). Then i went out for a jog around 7:30. I just tested again and i got .5 (trace).

I test my urine all the time and my urine tests are very consistent at 4.0 and only occasionally going into the 8.0 range.

As an additional side note last sunday i had half of a deep friend twinkie (twinkie coated in batter and deep fried). I assumed it would kick me out of ketosis so i was watching for it but my urine tests never dropped from 4.0. On that day i did walk several miles through sand and ocean water after eating the half twinkie…

I know neither foods are keto friendly but i make exceptions for interesting and rare culinary experiences. Im also a bit of a scientist at heart so im always curious to see what happens.

Of course you could have bounced back into keto. I think it really is an individual thing and most importantly is how long you have been keto. I guess I was offering the notion that the urine stix are a poor indicator.

I think it is true that lots of people who have been keto for a pretty long time and have not been bouncing in and out of keto, can burn the glucose pretty quickly and return to keto without any trouble. I know that I do. However, I do but I would remember that your body is still dealing with the glucose no matter so it is something that I don’t do very often. Glycation is the enemy.
