So many different sources say to avoid it, and some highly recommend it. i am 42hours into my water fast, and i have had two cups of home made bone broth made with epple cider vinegear, selary, union, garlic and ox-tail. Just boiled it all togheter for 24 hours, and filtrert it so i am drinking pure liquid from it, nothing solid. What is the sideeffects or the benefits to having some bonebroth while fasting?
Bone broth on fast, is it ok?
IDr. Fung and Megan (the fasting experts from IDM and the book- The Complete Guide to Fasting and the podcast- The Obesity Code) have a couple of things to say about this. The first is that whatever helps you to start developing your “fasting muscle” is okay. So, you might need more help as you begin to practice EFs. So, if your bone broth helps keep you fasting, that’s good. Maybe further on down the road you might need less help.
Also, it depends on whether you’re fasting for weight loss or autophagy, cancer prevention, etc. They seem to indicate that you have more flexibility when you’re fasting for weight loss. If your goal is autophagy, you might want to work to a point where you only have water and salt during your fasts. I just remind myself that this is a journey, and try to make changes over time, as they make sense.
I felt like I needed bone broth during my first fast. I was really weak and headachy. After some research, when I started my second EF, I used fat the first day (MCT and coconut oil in small amounts). I also added some daily pink Himalayan salt under my tongue, first thing in the morning. I’d let it dissolve and then drink some water. I did this several times a day, and added more if I felt those symptoms again. Haven’t felt like I needed the bone broth since that first fast. I know everyone is different. Just some ideas to consider as you’re figuring out works best for you.
Good luck!

I want to stop inflamation in my body, so i can have less pain in my muscles when i run and do jiu jitsu, i am a ultra marathon runner so i get some joint pains some time. I also want the benefits of mental clearity and weight loss(fat loss). Am i on the right track with the bone broth?
I don’t personally see a problem with it, others may disagree. If it’s worjing for you, helping you get through the fast, then go with it. You may find in time you don’t need to keep using it.
If it gets you over rough spots, have some. I personally use a half cup when I feel I might have to stop fasting if I don’t have something.
It will have some protein and probably will stop any autophagy that might be happening, but if weight loss is your goal, there is nothing wrong with doing that. I say probably because as of yet they have no way of knowing if autophage is happening, it is all based on theory currently, as no scientific testing on humans. And we are not mice nor bacteria on a slide so our results may or may not vary.
Mine is higher in protein. That looks OK, and as she said …if it helps, go for it.

My husband and I are starting our first “bone broth fast” today. He has had life long digestive issues, so this is mostly an experiment to see whether it helps with that but we are also trying to lose weight and heal our endocrine systems ultimately. We tried a water fast last week and his digestive issues reared their ugly head
I spent 2.5 days cooking the broth and it is very fatty, plus we will add a bit more fat to it (based on the understanding that the higher ratio of fat to protein consumed lowers the overall insulinogenic affect).
We spent the last few days eating pretty high LCHF calories (thanks to a roasted macadamia nut based cheesecake NOMS). We don’t have a plan for how long we’re going to bone broth + fats but will keep you posted!
Hoping we’ll work up to water only fasts eventually (for the autophagy and HGH benefits) but fat fasts and bone broth seem to beneficial on their own and also as a stepping stone towards zero calorie fasting.
good luck i dident make it three days, doh. i made it 48hours. but still i am realy proud of that, it was my first try. Hope you and you`re husband find what your loocking for. best of luck!
Hey, I say, do what is best for YOU!!! One of the side effects of a long fast is lack of minerals… if you find yourself feeling dizzy, totally depeleted of energy/etc… the bone broth can help. I am on day 18 of a 21 day “water” fast. I found my BP was too low, I was feeling totally depleted… so, I do a cup of bone broth in the AM and one before bed. If you are doing an extended fast with water only, bone broth will not “ruin” anything for you… as a matter of fact, it may help. I understand the whole autophagy thing, however, the ability to stay on the fast is important too! I see no lack of progress from the bone broth.
Keto on!!!
