Bone broth during fast

(Stacy ) #1

Hey there, does anyone have an opinion on of bone broth will break the fast? I get so many mixed responses…

That’s because fasting has many different faces. In extended fasting (see the fasting category on this forum), bone broth is often acceptable. There are also things called fat fasts and egg fasts. What’s common is an exceptional restriction on what you ingest. They all have different objectives.

If you want to know more about specific fast regimens, check out the fasting category and/or the books I’m certain are recommended there by Dr Jason Fung. Dr Fung is all over the web, including YouTube & dietdoctor.com

This question has been asked a LOT actually, and the reason for conflicting answers is all about the purpose of your fast. Why are you fasting:

If fasting for weight loss, it will NOT break it

If fasting for autophagy, there is evidence to believe that it may break it, but we don’t know where the line is.

COMMENT ADDED AS AN EDIT:

Asking the original question without giving the reason for fasting is like asking, “is it safe to drive 50 mph,” but not specifying the kind of car you are driving, road conditions, whether it is daylight or evening, the weather, etc.

It’s almost like we need a fasting flowchart!

Sorry I failed to give you the reason for the fast. I am intermittent fasting for weight loss … so thank you for answering my question and again…sorry for lack of communication. I know that driving 50 mph in an unknown vehicle under unknown circumstances is no bueno…so thanks for the side reminder

I’m currently reading Dr. Fung’s The Complete Guide to Fasting and there are several charts and graphics in it actually  Well worth reading.

I have the audio book of it (from Audible) which I’ve listened to once, but need to do it a few more times. I have all the recipes and charts etc in a PDF. I agree with you. Well worth reading.

Thanks, I will check it out

You have to see what it does for you. For many people, bone broth helps them get though extended fasts.

For myself, it triggers hunger and causes me to breakfast, so I skip it now.

the IDM website (Jason Fung et al) has lots of very helpful (and mostly free) posts about fasting…

Hope these help.
