Blue light is this new CICO

As opposed to “healthy whole grain noise”?

It was a lot of fun, except for the part where I got 3 hours of sleep a day because I was completing my undergrad. I have sleep apnea myself and have greatly benefitted from using a cpap, so I really enjoyed helping people get their apnea sorted.

I love f.lux; I’m also glad that my phone does this. I don’t know if it makes a difference with my sleep or not when I am in a dark setting the blue light is so harsh on my eyes.

Thanks Donna for those articles I’ve skim read them, very interesting. From my quick review blue light is the primary issue but light before bed, less clear is light in general.

Knowing my kids the content they watch is too stimulating for bedtime whatever the light type. If sleep issues are a problem dealing with the stimulation is a bigger issue but harder for experts to deal with. We almost need a stimulation filter. :flushed:

Kids are drastically short sleep on average, in my experience (my training was originally as a child and family therapist). Adolescents need to sleep even longer, and here in the US they have absurd school and activity schedules. Some of my clients had more homework than I did in grad school…it was ridiculous. I went to a college prep school and had less, but that’s a tangent…

Sleep deprivation can also stunt growth over time, though I’m dubious as to how much. At least I wish I could blame my own vertically challenged shortness on that, ha!

Actually, the idea of a stimulation filter is excellent, Nigel. I think even irregardless of sleep we could use it. Maybe I’ll do that for a weekly mental health challenge.

Stimulation filter sounds like yoga and meditation.

Maybe! But, it could also be art, coloring, building something, walking…

We are so used to stimulus around us we don’t do many of those things without it, any more. Sometimes I wonder what the world was like without recorded music. Talk about low stimulus? Not saying music is bad, but it is an idle thought. Now we are bombarded by messages and sound incessantly.

All of what @Donna posted!

I am very light dependent. I need bright light to get myself moving and I need to avoid it if I want to sleep. I try to avoid tv at least an hour before bed and I read real paper books in the tub while I’m winding down for bed. My bedroom has to be dark. If one of our phone screens lights up for some reason in the middle of the night, it wakes me up and can keep me awake for hours. (we flip them over, and my husband gets kicked if his phone wakes me for no reason).

On the flip side, I need sun, or at least artificial bright light, to be productive. If it’s dark and gloomy, no amount of coffee will get me moving. If it’s bright and sunny, i can stay up the entire day after a busy 24 hour shift. If I feel i must day sleep and its sunny, I wear dark glasses home until I get to bed with blinds and curtains closed.

My blue eyed husband - everything opposite. The bright sun gives him a headache and he is energetic on gloomy days. He is a saint. even though it feels obnoxiously bright, he bought me a Sunrise simulating alarm clock. Best thing ever. It helps me wake up so much happier.

I don’t think eye color has anything to do with it. I am blue-eyed and I love the sun, even need it. Sunshine, especially on my face makes me instantly happy. I need a very dark room to sleep at night. My husband even has to tape over the light on the smoke alarm, as it is obnoxious.

Not sure eye colour has anything to do with it either. I have clear blue eyes. Sun does not bug me.

Also, I can sleep very easily in bright sunlight. Like resting on a sandy beach on a sunny day…I can sleep no problem. I don’t need curtains drawn to shut light either. When it is time to sleep, I sleep. That’s all.

I didn’t mean to imply it’s because of his blue eyes. But that is what he would tell you.

Eating junk is demon I’m going to slay before I worry about the right pair of sunglasses to wear at the office. If there is merit to the BL hypothesis, I think it is in the framework of things like Circadian Rhythm and stress. Common sense in managing daily routines would go a long way to mitigate the rage of 24/7 modern lighting. Even so, it is a much smaller gauge on my dashboard. I’ll probably look at it closer when I’ve other stuff dialed in better and I wring diet and exercise for what it can do. Since I’ve been overweight and insulin resistant peeing once or twice a per night with a deafening snore is my enemy before any light. My sleep is already more restful than when I was twenty-five pounds heavier. I can’t wait to experience it when I’m lean.
