Decide to try Blue Apron a few weeks ago when there was a $30 off first order offer as I have never been a cook beyond my 3 staples: chili, meatloaf and pot roast. It’s actually been fun, and now I feel like I can actually cook and make tasty dishes. Unfortunately it seems that most all of their sides are fairly carby and have been enjoying these more than I should. So guessing I should cancel my subscription to avoid carb creep, but will miss it. Maybe since I’ve learned a few techniques can branch out on my own now? Or does anyone know if the other services (Hello Fresh, Plated, Home Chef, etc.) are more keto friendly?
Blue Apron blues
I used Plated for a couple years and actually learned how to cook real food that way. It’s great for that and much better than the processed crap diet I was on before.
But their low carb options all have at least 20-40 carbs per plate.
I got a box after going keto because I forgot to cancel that week’s box. I threw out the carbs and used the rest of the ingredients that were safe and added some substitutes.
I did end up canceling because I hated throwing away the beautiful bakery rolls that came with one of the meals.
I am low carb but not keto, so one meal that is around 20 carbs fits into my day.
Both Home Chef and Sun Basket publish their carbs and I can get 3 meals from either one each week that range between 15 and 30 carbs. I know that doesn’t work for most people on here but it works great for me.
Yesterday’s Home Chef meal was citrus miso salmon and bang bang brussels sprouts. It was great.
Green Chef has recently been saying they are doing low carb too but I don’t think they have it nailed down yet, from a cursory look at their recipes.
I only recently went low carb due to my doctor’s recommendation. Before that I would pick the menu from one of the various companies that I liked best for each week. When I had to count carbs I found that many of them don’t post the carbs at all, some refused to give them to me, so I canceled those.
I think I have a couple of free Home Chef boxes to give away if you want to try it out. Just PM your email.
Home Chef has a “lo carb” option. You have to watch it though, they like to throw Panko or flour in there sometimes. I too liked Blue Apron, but way to heavy on the carbs, I was just leaving out that part usually. I’ve also done Hello Fresh. Again too carby. Now I’m back to my own stuff. It was nice to add to the repetoire, but I have my own ideas to try.
