Blood work came back

(Julie Lambert) #1

Hi everyone, new to Keto started Jan 29,2018 been doing well on it I think have lost about 10 lbs so far. Had a BP follow up last week and doc took a blood test creatinine was above high normal not crazy high but about 14 points and AST was off a bit too. I’ve read several sites not sure what is reputable one say this diet can mess up your liver and kidneys and another says something different. I want to continue to do well but not st the expense of my organs and health.

It’s not advisable to get bloods done for, I think, the first six months on keto as the adaptation and early healing process does tend to cause some crazy results.

My blood work was to check on things because of new BP med and these results showed up. My doc wants to see me again in 4-6 weeks to redo. He’s very supportive of the diet and was very happy to see my blood pressure looking fantastic My weight coming down. I was wondering I’m just not drinking enough water I know it important to stay hydrated on the keto diet. How much water should I be taking in daily?

Just drink to thirst, no need to force it and too much will cause problems as it’ll flush out electrolytes.

Well, amazingly we have this thing called thirst, and when you are thirsty drink, when you are not then your body is saying you don’t need liquid.

This whole “drink x amount of water per day” is silly. Water makes up a large % of almost all food we eat and most drinks.

Some days I drink 2-3 litres because I am so thirsty, other days a small glass. Listen to your body and not some magic number someone gives you.

Hi all for the past several days I’ve felt dizzy, shaky and nauseous. I’ve read about the keto flu. My carbs are around 23-25 a day and I try to get protein and of course fat in my diet. My daughter who also does keto says I’m probably not eating enough and to have good higher fat snacks available. I work in retail and can’t be stuffing my face that regularly. I use a app to track my carbs, fat etc. it seems on target but I also haven’t seen anymore weight loss. I’m feeling a bit frustrated I don’t like feeling crummy all day and definitely am not comfortable with the dizziness. Even trying to eat dinner tonight feeling a bit nauseous made me not want to eat much. When I feel nauseous I of course want comfort food like a bowl of cornflakes. Are there easy foods to take as a snack? I was reading another site that says eat cheese another says don’t eat to much cheese, eat protein, don’t eat too much protein, count calories don’t count calories, my app does it for me anyway and I’m always under my allotted amount for my goals. Not sure what to do at this point. Frustrated and confused

This could be keto flu you are experiencing. If you’re already fat adapted, you may be low on electrolytes (sodium, magnesium, possibly potassium). The good news is, the answer to both is salt! So try some pink himilayan salt. Some say to take 1/2 tsp and just let it dissolve in your mouth. I’ve heard that when doing keto you may need up to 3 tsp a day to replenish your salt. I can’t remember if I heard it from Megan Ramos or from a 2KD podcast… Since salt is generally not in the natural food we eat, we need to supplement it. Drink water when thirsty. Just like another answer before, sometimes I drink 3 liters a day, sometimes I drink a few glasses. This will probably make you go to the bathroom a lot. Today I had made 4 trips to the loo by 11:30 am. That’s a lot more than before keto, but ‘normal’ for keto. If y ou’re fasting and feel that way, time to stop the fast and get some food in you. I keep macadamia nuts on hand. They are great for the fat and if you get some with sea salt on them, they are that much more delicious.

I have salted almonds on hand at work. I had blood work done recently and my sodium was on the high end of normal potassium was in range not sure about magnesium though. I do take BP meds which I’m hoping the keto eating would possibly do away with down the road, but I read to be careful about magnesium suppliments with blood pressure. I’m just having a hard time with feeling that this is worth it if I feel crummy. I’ve been doing this since Jan 29th I would have thought the keto flu would not be an issue by now.

It’s hard to say. You say you have 25 - 30 carbs a day… is that net or actual? It should be actual and it should be under 20 if you’re really trying to be strict at least for a while. You may not actually be in ketosis yet. Are you checking your ketones? The most simple way at the beginning like this is to use the pee sticks. After you get really fat adapted, they probably won’t work anymore (they still work for me, though), and then it’s said to move on to the blood strips or breathalyzer. I have a salt issue I think. I have too much of it and edema kicks in on my lower legs and ankles…I ended up having kankles. Ick. Also remember the blood work will take months to start calming down. It’s just a snap shot of the moment in time they took your bloodwork, our numbers can actually shift around quite a bit. I’m guessing A1c is a pretty good constant though. I try to keep that in mind.

Carbs are usually around 20-23 net everyday since I started, I use the keto strips and I have varied from trace to higher levels then back to between trace and medium today when I got home.

I see the doc again in 4 weeks or so to repeat test to check liver and kidney function as they were off a bit. He’s pretty supportive of the diet but not being in ketosis on a long term basis.

I’m still working out my own macros, so take my advice with a grain of salt. I know for me that I must stick to less than 20g actual carbs a day… and lately I’ve been contemplating zero carb/carnivore. So I’m looking into that, getting more information.
