Blood test back

(Luke Owen) #1

Hi,

I got my fasting blood test back with 90.1 mg/dl glucose and 10.3 mU/L insulin so a HOMA IR of 2.3.

I’ve been doing the diet 3 weeks… but was in a pretty bad way with carbs prior to that during lockdown.

I understand I ideally want HOMA IR below 1 right? And I’ll be using fat much more efficiently then?

Cheers
Luke

That is correct. As you go along, your numbers should steadily improve.

BTW, your HbA1C and C-peptide numbers are also good indicators of your degree of insulin resistance.

I think it a good idea to show the context of this post:

Alrighty,

Well I’ll test again in a couple of months.

Thanks!

My HOMA-IR is all over the map:

This is probably because my “fasting” insulin is all over the map, but also my blood sugar is higher in the morning.

Like every other metric, it’s just one metric. Look at the whole person.

Surely the 33 insulin is a lab mistake?

Not a mistake. Shocked me so much I got a test done two weeks later (but did not calculate HOMA-IR).

I don’t know what influences fasting insulin.

But I find it odd my insulin was high…while my A1c went lower. Doesn’t quite make sense.

I theorize (1) fasting a lot might have a rebound effect on insulin (was fasting quite a bit before that test); and/or what you eat the day before might have an effect.

Unfortunately, until we get tests I can take daily or multiple times per day, I won’t know.

I suspect that when we eat the proper human diet, the variability of a lot of these numbers becomes much less of a concern.
