Started keto in November, have done well a1c has dropped from 10 to 6.1, and have lost 40 pounds. But blood sugar has crept up from it’s low point of about 85 to 90 before a meal, and now is anywhere from 100 to 110. Is this type of thing normal, any thoughts on getting blood sugar down some more. I’m afraid I still have a minor addiction to diet soda and wonder if that is holding me back
Blood sugar has wandered up a little
I had trouble getting my blood sugars stable before I quit artificial sweeteners, but that was a few years before I started keto, when I was still on Metformin and Insulin.
What is your eating pattern (meal timing) and how much protein are you having at each meal?
I’m eatingtwo to three times a day but not on a regular schedule, I’m on call all the time and work all hours of the day and night. I’m provably a little heavy on protein, it’s easier for me to eat while I’m working, but I w would say I’m under 100 grams of protein per day ( I weigh 250 lbs)
100 grams of protein shouldn’t be a problem unless you eat it all in one sitting.
With an irregular schedule, it could easily be cortisol fluctuations affecting your blood sugar more than your food choices.
How low is your carb intake? Are you counting total carbs, or net carbs?
I wouldn’t expect that level of carbs to drive up your glucose. Maybe somebody else has some ideas.
Your organs are saving the glucose for those parts of the body that absolutely cannot do without it (for example, your brain loves beta-hydroxybutyrate, but it also needs a certain minimum of glucose, whereas your muscles are fine without it). As long as your HbA1C continues its downward trend, you are fine.
That’s the red flag to me, hard to get a good night’s sleep with a schedule like that! And I don’t see how to correct it, either.
It is difficult, sleep when I get a chance, but that part of my job is not going to change
Yeah, figured that.
You’ve done a great job, now let the tweaking begin! Just like most of us, you’ve gotten off to a really great start, and then hit the dreaded plateau. Only for you it’s worse because of the creeping blood sugars.
No use stressing about what can’t be changed, so KCKO. And for keeping calm, might meditation help? I feel silly mentioning it, but I know it helps a lot of people stay calm and feel centered.
We keto-ers don’t have a guidebook, nobody knows exactly what to do when we find a problem because the science isn’t there yet. We are all n=1, and first we try one thing, then we try another. Tweak.
