Blood Sugar after working in yard

(David ) #1

I guess I dont understand. Everything has been doing really good on Keto so far until today. I worked out in the yard today for about 2 hours. Came in took a half hour break and decided to take Blood Sugar reading.after the break It was 154 wow. THats the highest its been since getting things under control with keto. Also I hadnt ate anything 3 hours previous so i guess it couldnt have been food related. My pulse was also up at 92. Whats going on I was doing so well?

You were stressing your body, by working in the yard. It’s acute stress, so it’s fine; the stress we want to avoid is the chronic kind. In any case, your hard work caused the release of cortisol, which brought up your blood sugar, to feed your muscles.

All this is to say that your body is working as designed, and there’s nothing to worry about.

P.S.—How long have you been on a ketogenic diet? And do you have any way of measuring your blood sugar and ketones?

Starting week six I know not long compared to most of you. I am still trying to learn. I have the Keto sticks and just a regular finger stick BS monitor.

Give your body several more months to get itself sorted out. I bet you’ll eventually find that your blood glucose starts to remain within a fairly narrow range. If it does, that’s fine, even if the range is higher than you think it should be. A lower average glucose with wide spikes and drops is not nearly as healthy.

Also, in case no one has warned you, there will probably come a day when the urine strips stop showing much in the way of ketones. This is perfectly normal, and nothing to be concerned about. And if they don’t stop showing ketones, that’s perfectly normal, too. There is a lot of individual variation.

What’s your “normal” blood glucose?

My blood sugar always goes up during exercise. I’ve heard that longer exercising, such as running miles, will cause glucose to drop (and ketones to increase). I’ve never tested that (my workouts are shorter).

And when I was wearing a CGM, the highest daily glucose I got was when I worked out in the morning, then did a ton of physical work around the house. High all day.

My new normal in the morning is right around 100 range. Before Keto 150 up. Rarely does my BS drop below 100 even on keto. Thanks for all the help.

Just make sure to take it before bed/in the evening too. For me, that’s when I get my lowest readings. Could be different for you, though.

Normal reaction to physical exertion.
Always advised not to check blood sugar after exercise.

Glucose for explosive power (sprints, weightlifting competitions), ketones for endurance (marathons, repetitions).

Could be true. If I can, I’ll buy some strips and test before and after training for my 5k. Not sure if that’s long enough. We’ll see. I would say that I’d compare with my body weight training, but I know that causes my blood sugar to go up.

Too bad the CGMs in the US need a doctor’s prescription, and they’re so dang expensive. Those are by far better than pricking yourself over and over again.

154 isn’t high, you did 2hrs of physical work which is a stress on the body, that’ll raise BG. 92 also isn’t high and within the normal range, having that after 2hrs of working out is great.

I’ll offer some n=1 data, gathered by checking my blood glucose following different kinds of exercise:

I typically see falling glucose after “easier” workouts (e.g., light cardio - burning glucose with a walk) and rising glucose after higher exertion levels (e.g., HIIT strength or cardio - gluconeogenesis to feed the need).

Context: it’s still within a narrow band of +/- 15 around a mean of about 100 mg/dL.

While I expect it was exercise that was the cause, I just thought I would point out, that 3 hours is not enough to dismiss food intake. Glucose production from fat intake peaks 3-4 hours after ingestion, and protein can peak even longer, depending on the Amino Acids present. Again, I agree with others that it is probably exercise/stress from exercise unless you had an extremely large meal just before going out.

This is what mine looks like, this was probably a body weight exercise session:

I haven’t tested enough different styles or intensities to comment on those.

This is what it looks like in context, no exercise Monday or Wednesday, which have lower blood sugar levels due to no exercise:
