Blood sugar after cold shower

Hi All, after listening to the KetoHacking MD podcast, where Jimmy Moore is doing an ice bath for 20 minutes, I decided to start ending my showers with cold water. This morning, I went to the gym (HIIT only) and ended with a cold shower, then went to work. I took my blood sugar when I got up in the morning and then when I got to work. These are the values:

ColdShowerBS

5:19 is waking, 7:40 is after HIIT, cold shower, getting to work. I was so shocked by the 151 I had to take it again, and got 127. I never see 127 unless I eat something with carbs in it.

Could the cold shower cause the high(er) blood sugar?

In the KetoHacking MD episode, they discussed the beneficial effects (mainly brown fat) of cold therapy/hack, but never said anything about blood sugar.

More likely the HIIT I would think as exercise messes with blood sugar. It’s advised not to check it after exercise as you’ll get a false reading.

I would think that, except that I have many tests where blood sugar goes up only a few points (sometimes even goes down). For instance, here’s one with just HIIT (I usually do both HIIT and weights):

AnotherBS

This uses a continuous glucose monitor, and the 111 is a double-check from my Contour Next EZ blood glucose monitor.

I have many, many more similar to this, showing a mild increase (or decrease, as this one shows) in blood sugar. Nowhere near a 23 point increase.

I may have to measure before and after a cold shower this weekend.

While I find brown adipose tissue a fascinating topic (my recently fired endocrinologist even wrote a paper about brown fat and thyroid… one of many reasons I was excited to see her https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/24622373), I don’t know that enough is known about it to really be worth pursuing.

Ben Bikman has done some work with BAT.

Is it possible that the stress of the cold shower caused a cortisol spike?

Good question. I will report additional results once I test again. The problem is I keep fogetting to take a cold shower… I’m averaging once every 3-4 days.

It could also be 2 bad strips, but that does not seem likely and I used two different fingers, too, and all fingers were clesn.
