It seems that I am reading about more and more people having elevated Blood Pressure while in the beginning stages of kete( first 3 months or so). I too am having this issue and I do not see anyone with a reason as to why this is? I was put on blood pressure medicine and have been on keto for 2 1/2 months. Im done 34 lbs feel great. do crossfit 3-5 times a week and still my blood pressure is high. I have been on the meds about a month. im still running a 150/100 blood pressure. I do drink a cup of coffee at work everyday but that cant be the only reason??
Blood Pressure still high
I am home monitoring now, I expected it to drop but it has only slightly droped since then. down 9 lbs from dr visit and everything else is fine.
I still take my BP meds…my diastolic numbers are a bit lower but I figure I might not get off them because my family history is pretty prolific-my grandmother was one them in her thirties and my cousin before he was out of high school. Not to mention that my Dad had a massive heart attack at 36. I think it’s safer to just stay on the beta blocker for preventions sake.
150/100
I haven’t really had any alcohol except for in Vegas last week
great read by the way. adding to my frustration… I know it works and im trying to be patient but im worried about blood pressure.
My husband is dealing with the same thing. He has lost 35 pounds with keto in that last 4months and he is amazed that his BP is still high. However it is only the top number that is high. 150/77. The BP pill (even 1/2 a pill) makes him dizzy because it lowers the BP too much. What else should he do to help lower his BP ? We fear that if he goes to the doctor, he will just say go back to a sad diet. I would rather fix it ourselves.
I have a similar profile to your husband, but I’m 76. I also have intermittent claudication (mild arteriosclerosis in legs). Ivor Cummins (Fat Emperor) suggested reading “The Salt Fix” and potassium supplementation… I have just downloaded the book. Maybe this might help.
I appreciate you posted this because I already had high blood pressure way before starting Keto but after about 40 days into Keto, it is still high. I don’t want to go to the doctor either. I have been researching the past few days into how long it takes to Keto-adapt or fat-adapt because I still don’t feel fat adapted. I discovered the Dawn Phenomenon (https://idmprogram.com/dawn-phenomenon-t2d-8/), which explains that because I already have a lot of sugar storage from years of carbage, its difficult for me to get into full ketosis until my body uses up that sugar- which is happening, just is happening slowly.
In the meantime, is the suggestion to take potassium and drink more chicken broth? I would like to get this resolved to because it is concerning. Could it be that, like me, you don’t feel fully fat adapted yet?
I have been eating a keto diet for a couple of years but don’t test for ketones, Al my markers are good apart from high BP. The ideal BP seems to be a moving target anyway, I have read the “Salt Fix” book now and have decided to increase my salt intake and start taking Potassium supplement. I am loathe to take BP pills or statins as I am concerned about side effects.
How has increasing your salt affected your blood pressure? Any changes since this post in December?
