Blood ketone levels not changing

(Dev Radia) #1

Hey guys

Ive been doing keto on and off for the past year and had some amazing and life chsnging results. After a recent period of being of struggling to get back onto it, managing a week on then 2 weeks of binging, then another 2 weeks on then 3 weeks of binging, i have managed to get on to it 100%.

Ive been on it for 2 weeks straight, and Ive been walking a good amount and lifting weights.

I havent lost any weight at all and I just dont get it. Ive been drinking 2L of water per day. Ive been taking lots of supplements as recommended by dr Berg, and taking MCT oil, and apple cider vinegar daily.

I take body fat, waist, chest and weight measurements almost daily. Ive seen zero change. Ive kept my carbs at 20g max. Some days Ive even done OMAD and Ive done some IF too.

I measure my blood ketone levels and it hasnt moved from 1.7mg in over a week which has never happened to me before. Normally in the past it has steadily increased up to as high as 5.0. Especially when I am doing OMAD.

I dont know what im doing wrong. Ive cut out alcohol which normally helps loads (ok I had one small vodka soda last night as was stressed).

I know from reading this forum I should be patient, but Ive always had some sucess in the first two weeks, 2 pounds would be so good! Even 1 is something good but zero?

Im eating some dark choc high cocoa levels and some macadamia or brazil nuts daily and im wondering if thats causing it? I always keep to 20g of carb levels though?

I weight 80.65kg/177.8 pounds im male 38 5ft 9. I work shift patterns and this last week Ive been on 4am starts and then sleeping in afternoon, Iwonder if this is effecting me.

Any help from you amazing inspiring people would be much appreciated from this frustrated individual!

Thanks!
D

On again off again is not good and your metabolism might still be recovering. Eating fat reduces the amount of endogenous fat burn so you might need to eat less. Exercise does not necessarily help lose weight. You may be gaining enough lean mass to offset any fat mass loss.

When you had the high ketone readings, were you at a heavier weight and/or have pre-diabetes or T2D?

5 mmol of ketones is an unsusally high level for a non-fasting keto diet, and by that I don’t mean OMAD but multi-day fasts. 1.7 mol is actually higher than what a lot of us see and is no reason for concern. One thing that happens as we heal our adipose tissue is that it doesn’t ignore insulin and “leak” free fatty acids (FFA) into the bloodstream. FFA are what the liver uses to create ketones and contributes to glucose production in the absence of dietary carbohydrate. T2D have less control over this fat flow and it’s part of why they don’t control glucose levels well.

Yo-yo dieting messes up your metabolism big time.

If you stay on track and get rid of all the snacks -do say two meals a day and no snacking, and divide your macros between the two meals, say an IF window of 18:6 and just eat whole foods, not the dark chocolate or nuts and cut out all artificial sweeteners. If you are doing the other proper keto things, like the 20 carbs or less, NO sugar, adequate proteins, healthy fats, water, electrolytes and salt, then in time your body will respond =).

I was at a bit heavier weight, maybe 3.2kg more.

I dont have diabetes.

The longest fast i did was 36 hours a few times.

Thanks, Ive done all of that except eliminate the nuts and choc.

So Iguess Icould try cutting down on those. Although I find it helps me not to cheat to just enjoy a bit of choc…but its worth a try!

Hmm not too sure if im gaining much mass. You need to eat excess calories to add muscle and im not doing that.

But yes i understand the fact that the yo yo ing has ruined me lol.

Dr berg does say to get through a plateau its god to increase activity so im going to do less weights and walk more.

You don’t have to give them up forever, Dev_Radia, just for now =).

I know our bodies have to adjust, but it is a big change! We all ate badly for years before Keto, it was hard for everyone at first, but you can do this!! =).

I find for myself, having herbal teas with nice flavours can help, feels like a treat, and no carbs and no calories to worry about =).

We all want to you succeed, so if you have any questions, just ask =).
