Blood glucose much higher on keto diet

#1

Hi,
I have been doing the Keto diet for 40 days. Before I started my blood glucose was between 74 - 80. Now I am consistently between 94 - 100. I test my self in the morning, but find it very strange that it is higher on the keto diet than before when I was eating carbs and sugar. Can anyone explain why this happens and reassure me that is OK!
I have not cheated once, eat three meals per day, breakfast consisting 2 eggs, bacon and tomatoes or some other carbs, lunch is usually protein, fat and a small amount of carbs, coffee with coconut oil or cream, dinner the same, 3-6oz protein, fat and a small amount of carbs. Total carbs per day is under 20g net carbs.
I am also feeling extremely tired. I read that it is good to walk so I have been trying to drag myself out but all I really want to do is sleep…
All comments gratefully received! Am not struggling with the food at all, infact I am finding it a great and satisfying diet. I have lost 10lbs in 40 days so it is working, just worried about the high blood sugar…

The theory goes something like this: as your body becomes fat-adapted and your body starts burning its fat, that energy is released, resulting in slightly higher blood glucose readings.
It’s perfectly normal provided the readings are relatively stable.

Thanks for posting as I have noticed this as well. Will the level go back down eventually?

You really need to know your fasting insulin to complete the picture, since glucose by itself doesn’t tell all that much. If your glucose goes up a bit but your fasting insulin goes down your HOMA-IR can be better overall, but looking only a glucose you would think things are worse.

Many thanks for the comments. Today I did a test. My blood sugar was 100 at around 10am before eating. So then I ate 5 bacon rashers and an avocado. Then I thought well if I walk that should reduce the glucose as I will be using it for the energy needed to walk… so I just got back after brisk walking for one hour and my blood glucose has gone UP to 112!!! So this is so weird, everything is happening in reverse to what I think should happen!!

Any reasons why this would be also gratefully received!!

I would check the meter if I were you.

In meter-talk the difference between 100 and 112 is no difference at all really. So much allowed error.

Do you have enough supplies to test twice now and again? Just to see if the meter is consistent? Can you get a 2nd meter to compare to?

The overall BG rise is normal in some folks. It’s called glucose sparing.

You really need to separate the two variables here, the food and the exercise.

True. BG can go up after a walk depending on effort (casual stroll vs brisk walk). It can also go down.
