Blood glucose high in the morning

(Jorge L) #1

Is it normal for blood glucose to be high in the morning? For the last week, I have been taking my ketones and glucose readings in the morning and my glucose hovers around the 105 mark. Later in the day, it drops between 60-80 usually. Curious if this is normal, or if I should knock off the snacking on cheese and nuts at night!!!

You describe the “dawn phenomenon.” https://www.diabetesselfmanagement.com/blog/controlling-the-dawn-phenomenon/

I found personally that if I didnt get enough sleep, 5 or less hours, I’ll be around 100. If I get 7+, I’ll wake up in the low 80’s

Stress definitely exacerbates DP for me.

On a nice relaxed day, my BG will rise from mid 4’s overnight (about 80) to high 5’s (like 105) by late morning before falling back. On a stressful morning, I can be 7.5 (135) or more without doing anything different.

Also interesting is that I’m not necessarily conscious of stress at the time.

Thanks. Stress is through the roof here lately, so I’ll keep an eye on it. @KBDelight I’ll watch the number based on sleep too.

Whoa, I think i figured out what happened, and it is not stress. I switched from my Precision Xtra meter to an iHealth BG5. I have measured 10 or so times and every measurement is 110mg/dl or very close. Seemed odd… Now I read the vial of test strips and it declares the range is 113~170 for these strips!!! Ordering up some Precision Xtra Glucose strips to verify that is the issue!!!

Yup, the issue was the BG5 strips were rated from 110-160(?). When I use the precision extra strips, my glucose level is around 70. Yay!

I see you figured out the issue, but still thought I’d contribute my observation. I’m 6’4’m and weigh 225 lbs after 10 months of first mostly vegetarian diet for 3 months, then low carb for 4 months and now keto for about 3 months. I’ve been closely monitoring my blood glucose numbers for about a week and saw that when I eat the maximum number of protein a day (150 gr) and get most of my protein at dinner, I wake up with BG numbers at high 90s or low 100s. When I eat about 80gr protein and eat most of that during lunch, I wake up with 85-88 BG. I also think sleeping 8 hours does wonders. Hope this helps.

Good job solving that. For what it’s worth about 6 months ago I was also getting the same reading every morning which seemed strange. Turns out the 2 grams of Vitamin C I take each morning was interferring with the chemistry on the BG testing strip. Moral of the story, don’t take the Vitamin C before testing. Problem solved.
