Blood Glucose carb test

(Lynne Austin Whitmore) #1

Just bought a blood glucose meter, and thought I’d test to see how I react to carbs. I’ve never been diagnosed with any blood sugar issues and whilst about 10kg overweight at the moment haven’t had any huge weight issues. But I have skin tags and my mother was diagnosed pre diabetic and recently died of dementia. Hence my health concerns with blood sugar I’m also hypothyroid.

My results surprised me and I’m not sure what they mean I had 2 small slices of whole grain sour dough and 3 eggs. My base line reading was 5.3 then at 30t 7.0, 60t 8.0 and 120t 8.1 and still 6.9 at 3 hours. I know it was a lot of carbs but should it stay high for so long?

Really looking to find the best use of the blood glucose monitoring, as seems it may be more of a problem than I thought.

I think what you are doing is an excellent idea. I did the same and found many of the foods I thought were healthy while eating LCHF were still causing excessive glucose spikes such as you measured after eating toast. It’s what prompted me to go keto. And after a year I’ve found my tolerance for carbs has gotten much better and I’m far more relaxed now about eating high quality carbs though I think I’m through with all flour based foods for good.

From your test it appears you are pre-diabetic and should cut back or eliminate the toast, though you should keep testing as it might have been a fluke. A wide variety of other factors can come into play such as stress, sickness, sleep, etc. Also, it’s important to verify the accuracy of your meter and strips using control solution or comparing to other test results such as medical labs.

Get an a1c test at your first opportunity. It will give you an average blood sugar over 3 months.

It would be useful indeed to get your HbA1c tested but also fasting glucose, fasting insulin and triglycerides.
