Bloated and gassy

(Kellie) #1

Iv been on keto since April 16 2018 and been fairly strict but the last few days Iv been bloated and gassy and I’m not sure why. I have eaten some veggies more than normal but for it to last 3 days is weird to me. Also weight keeps fluctuating. Iv been at 164 (the ounces have been like .2 or .4) this whole week and now scale says 165 today. Grrrrr :frowning:

What have you been eating? Could be the veggies, some people are sensitive, but could be sweeteners or something else.

The weight fluctuations is nothing. You have to get used to expecting this in Keto far more than other diets due to the diuretic nature of Keto and the constant need to rehydrate. You can fluctuate as much as 4 pounds in water weight per day.

I’ve found broccoli to be particularly gas inducing.

I eat the same foods for the most part every day. Coffee with heavy cream ,Hard boiled eggs, lettuce with cucumber and tomato and keto approved dressing- sometimes I have it with chicken , avocados , cheese sticks , Tuna that I add oil and mustard to, dark chocolate at night . Last couple days Iv had broccoli one night with steak because I went out to Applebee’s , and another time I didn’t wanna cook so I went to a place (jacks urban eats) and picked up a chicken with lemon and mixed veggies (summer squash and zuchinni drenched in butter) oh and I also have been having these bai drinks but it’s carbonated so maybe that’s it but I’m literally so gassy and uncomfortable and even cramping and it’s not my girl time so I’m not sure why my stomach is upset . Last night -4th of July - I was bad (I had a little wine and an otter pop(freeze pop basically sugar which I’m regretting because I probably got kicked out of ketosis now ) but I’m not counting yesterday as a reason for my issue because this whole week Iv felt this way

Veggies and dairy are the culprits for all of my digestive problems. I have no problem avoiding the former, but heavy cream is like fucking cocaine.

#6

You might also have some chemicals / pesticides form your veggie intake.

I only have two tablespoons heavy cream I measure it out. I’m used to it by now since I do this every day lol

Mmmmm good to know

Sorry for asking TMI but is it possible you’re constipated? I get constipated off and on without being able to pinpoint a particular reason for it yet, still working on it. But what you’re describing about how you’re feeling sounds a lot like the last time I had it. In my case, because of timing, I assumed it was PMS cramps at first and then realized it wasn’t.

I guess it’s possible . I feel like everything has been normal in that department. Because I drink coffee in the morning my bowel movements are rather softer at least the first one in the morning because that’s just what coffee does to me lol makes me have the sh*ts haha but the rest of the day is normal . My last period was 2 weeks ago but I did just get off birth control last month after being on it 5 years with no periods at all . I got off it because it contributed to weight gain and I feel it would be easier to loose weight off it .

Cruciferous veggies can cause bad gas (cauliflower, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, etc.). If I eat raw broccoli, I’ll be in crippling paid for several hours :frowning:

I read up on it and it’s related to production of alpha-galactosidase, an enzyme that digests whatever’s in cruciferous veggies.

(You've tried everything else; why not try bacon?) #12

One of the causes of constipation is a lack of sodium. Try increasing the amount of salt you eat. Not only do we excrete more sodium when we don’t eat carbs, but some recent research seems to indicate that the dietary guidelines are far too low.

Thanks Paul! I thought I’d been staying on top of sodium but I’ll try increasing for a while next time I have this issue and see how it goes!

Bai has erythritol which is a sugar alcohol. It can cause digestive upset.
