Biggest Loser Returns

(Edith) #1

Wow! I never watched the Biggest Loser. It sounds like it was truly horrible what they did to the contestants. I wonder what will be different this time around.

(Susan) #2

I never watched it either. It is surprising it is back after all the negative reports about it.

At least we are all on the right track doing Keto =).

I don’t know if I am just a middle aged misery guts, but there are so many programmes lately that seem to be about breaking people’s mental and physical health for the joy of the viewer.
Love Island and Big Brother attract the mentally vulnerable as evidenced by the associated suicides/attempts. The Biggest Loser was found to have wrecked people’s metabolism and future happiness.
I find it truly shocking and depressing.

I could never get through an episode. I just kept yelling at the TV, “It doesn’t have to be so hard! Get a steak and some bacon!”

(You've tried everything else; why not try bacon?) #5

But get your own bacon, don’t take mine!!!:rofl::bacon::bacon:

They will monitor contestants metabolisms on a weekly basis via indirect calorimetry, and they will serve them a medically validated, healthy Mediterranean diet during their starvation and abuse.

Ironically, the danger doesn’t come from the semi-starvation, it comes from the exercise during the metabolic stress. If they hadn’t exercised so much, they all would would have been fine. Nothing is more metabolically destructive than excessive exercise in conjunction with severe calorie restriction.

It’s an absolutely a sadistic show, and although the producers are indemnified from civil liability due to waivers signed by contestants, that doesn’t mean they shouldn’t be prosecuted and spend some time rotting in jail. Sick bastards… :rage:

Apparently with the reboot, new emphasis is on “wellness”. And not “haw haw make those fatties work out until they collapse”, which was apparently the focus of the previous show. (I’ve never seen it myself but I heard stories…)

Just like Weight Watchers is now “WW” because nobody cares about body weight / fat any more, and only “wellness” matters. (Some irony implied here.)

(Windmill Tilter) #8

I bet they tried to re-brand from “Biggest Loser” to “Wellest Winner” , but it didn’t focus group as well… :yum:

#9

Considering that about 85% of body physique is due to diet, then it is really stupid for them to work these people out like this. These are just people trying to get their life back on track, not elite athletes training for a sport. The show would be better if they just changed peoples lives in a way that they could sustain the loss instead of some rapid gimmick. Make it a much longer challenge and see who keeps it off.

(Edith) #10

The problem is the attention spans of the viewers are too short for something like that.

So true, and so sad.

You are my soul sister.

(Rebecca ) #13

Hahahaha!! Irony is right!! They “say” that, but still use the scale each week to decide if you had a “successful week” or not…if you didn’t, then it’s your own fault! Believe me…going to those meetings for years really messed with my head…and metabolism.

(Jack Bennett) #14

Yeah, it seems more like a branding and image change than a real change in strategy. My guess is they want to capture some people who are more interested in “wellness” rather than lose their core customer who is interested most in weight loss.

#15

It’s all pre-recorded. Just follow for a year and put it into 6 weeks of TV or whatever they run it for.

#16

Surely they’ll talk about HIT in the exercise part? Just do 15 minutes of resistance training twice per week. As a TV episode producer, that would save a lot of footage and could be used to explore the mental health trauma the people are suffering and put that out on public display for higher ratings (that’s what they do with those artificial environment dating shows where nobody is seen in their tracky daks).

(Keto Koala 🐨) #17

Omg don’t get me started on the biggest loser. They basically starve them and make them exercise at least 8 hours a day. They are basically in starvation mode. They drop a tonne of weight in like 6 weeks, like 100 pounds or something, which is unsustainable and then after the show, their bodies are so damn starving that they usually gain it all back and some. :flushed: Sometimes the contestants are so exhausted they actually start puking during exercise. It’s inhumane if you ask me. But anything for higher ratings right!!!

Omg really!!! I didn’t know that, well it makes sense. Who the hell could lose over 100 pounds in 6 weeks!!

:joy:, This got my first good chuckle of the morning.
