I’m not diabetic but I monitor my blood sugar because my ketones run on the high side and I want to be sure I’m in a safe zone. I’ve been using the One Touch for glucose and the Precision for ketones. By mistake I bought glucose strips instead of ketone strips for Precision, so I decided to compare the two meters. Non-fasting, the numbers were the same, but early morning fasting numbers were way different. The One touch was 101 and the Precision was 87. This isn’t a one-off; I got similar results on a different morning. Anyone have a similar experience or have any advice about which meter to believe?
Big difference between One Touch Ultra and Precision Xtra
That is well within the margin of error for both meters. It’s more surprising when they give the exact same reading.
I’ve tested quite a few meters and gave up over time. They are better for gross results than exact results.
Most will list within 15% accuracy, which is good. That’s decently within that, and who says either is wrong? We have a lot of blood, thinking the concentration is going to be exact when our blood is flying around our system isn’t realistic.
If you’re not diabetic, and your A1C is well within a good range and not walking the line, don’t bother wasting the money on the strips.
If you want to see how different foods affect you, then just get a CGM, it winds up being cheaper than test strips, and a hell of a lot easier (and more accurate). Finger sticks are a momnent in time, you miss the real curve happening, and even when you see it, you don’t really see it either.
Thanks - I got used to testing fasting blood glucose when I got the pre-diabetes diagnosis. Recently, It bothers me that my numbers are so high with the One Touch; it just doesn’t make sense, given my ketone levels. This morning the One Touch showed 92 while the Precision showed 75. So I decided to take the two numbers and find their average. It was 83. Not very scientific, but I can live with that . As you say, it’s probably not all that important as long as my numbers are not out of range.
I’d expect higher morning blood sugar too.
Look at Tuesday, which was keto. Morning is higher, and it gets lower at night. Wednesday was the day before Thanksgiving, so ice cream that night. Thursday was Thanksgiving, so high carb.
But my blood sugar is highest in the morning, lowest at night.
This is a better one, as it shows the difference between morning and evening blood sugar better than the last one:
