Big Blood Sugar Swings

(buzz) #21

@amwassil : Thank you for the links! I have always had an affinity for vinegar, so ACV is a part of my usual diet. Homemade Italian dressing/marinade is my preferred delivery method!

@ctviggen: Unfortunately, there doesn’t seem to be much interest (funding) for RCTs of things that the big dogs (our government included) can’t profit from, which is what makes groups like this, and the experience of its members, valuable to me. I don’t want anyone’s experience censored. I like to hear it all, then come to my own conclusions.

Thank you for your replies!

I’d be interested in your experimenting with drinking 2-3 tablespoons of ACV 15 minutes before bedtime - diluted in a cup or so of water. Determine whether or not this affects your morning glucose levels. Thanks.

I’ll give this a shot and follow-up with observations.

Good Morning,

My blood sugar was 119 this morning, lower than usual. I took the ACV at bedtime, but now that I read @amwassil 's post again, I realize that I mistakenly took three Tsp instead of Tbsp. I’ll check blood sugar tonight (I didn’t last night) to see if the dawn effect is lessening, or if my blood sugar is dropping overall.

My hands were cold most of yesterday, which (in the past) has indicated my blood sugar dropping closer to normal levels, so we’ll see. I’m on week five of keto/IF, so hopefully that’s the case.

Thanks again for the advice and encouragement!

sure…yea…

You are doing great! Glad your BS is dropping and as you continue the “keto way” you will reverse some of the damage caused by the food pushers (aka Big Food) who spend their days in their labs developing foods that hit what they call “the bliss point”.

Years ago when I was struggling with my weight I picked up a bag of Bagel Crisps. Toasted slices of bagels soaked in chemicals and amazing flavors. I was not one to normally give in to cravings…… but this product…. I would eat the whole bag and think WTF??? Bliss point.

Thank you! I know it not a great snack, but my “cheat” has been peanut butter, and it’s enough to keep me from doing worse. It’s decent peanut butter: just organic peanuts and salt, so it could be worse. Two Tbsp a day is my limit, and I hope to wean myself off soon.

No worries. I ate spoons of peanut butter to keep me going early on. It’s all good!

I usually do 1 tbsp ACV (with the “mother”), 1 tbsp lemon juice, and 8 ounces of sparkling water.

Be sure to drink it with a straw, getting the liquid past the teeth and into the throat. From what I hear, too much ACV directly on the teeth can be a bad thing.

I should preface this with a reminder that since beginning keto in Jan 2017, I have not experienced what I define as ‘real’ hunger. While eating SAD all my life I experienced relatively ‘normal’ hunger and satiety, but with keto not so much. Any hunger has always manifested as only very slight and fleeting - just a faint reminder and then gone. As for satiety, I eat to macros because I can always eat more. The macros - and my stable weight and body comp - tell me when I’ve eaten enough.

For whatever it’s worth - which may or may not be much - I just had the following experience. I have been taking lime juice, about a 1/4 cup mixed with soda water and/or Fresca, a couple of times during the evenings, generally once before my eve meal and once again afterwards. This to supplement citrate. I had also been taking about 1/4 cup of red wine vinegar diluted in 3/4 cup of plain water just before bed to supplement acetyl… For various reasons I had neglected the vinegar for more than a week. Mostly because my evening ‘schedule’ has been rather chaotic recently and I just keep forgetting.

Anyway, this past Friday (Feb 11) I drank my vinegar before and after my evening meal rather than the lime juice. My experience of the previous weeks when I drank vinegar at bed time was that I felt a little more ‘hunger’ by morning than usual, but still within the overall bonds of my keto experiences. Saturday morning, this was even more accentuated. In fact, I could say it was the first time since beginning keto that I actually awoke ‘hungry’!

My initial guess is that the vinegar suppresses glucose overnight and by morning the low glucose triggers the ‘hunger’. I haven’t tested this hypothesis with a CGM, but will do so the next time I buy a sensor. My previous CGM experiments generally showed my glucose the lowest in the hours before arising, then followed by the modest rise of the ‘dawn effect’.

Curiously, the hunger went away again as usual and only lasted slightly longer than my normal experience. But… and this is significant. Even though I ate only my normal keto coffee ‘breakfast’ and later at work a rather modest midday meal, my hunger never came back again even though it was a very busy day at Walmart. This even though I was very tired when I got home yesterday - it was the last day of 5 consecutive work shifts - and I went straight to bed. I did not eat supper nor take any citrate or vinegar. It’s already late morning on Sunday and I still feel no hunger. Although, I did have my morning keto coffee.

For anyone that’s interested in blood glucose in the morning, Dr. Jason Fung has a video on Youtube that I found helpful:

Thank you for all the replies. @amwassil, I have stopped taking vinegar at bedtime because my morning glucose has returned to more normal levels. Your experience is interesting.

Thanks for this link. for the benefit of others who might come along, Dr. Fung mentions elevated fasting glucose in particular near the end at time mark 10:15 ff.

NOPE!

Ha! Blunt enough

I feel satisfied when my lowest reading is below 100.
(Then again, my highest post-meal reading barely tops 120)
