BGL question

(Randy) #1

I’m type 2, I’ve been in a large ketosis for over a month, in ketosis for about 6-7 weeks but my BGL has still been a little high - 150 ish and this morning 180. I can think of no reason dietary for it to be elevated… any thoughts?

I don’t know much about it but I’ve heard of the “dawn effect” which helps explain some cases of high reading of blood glucose in the morning. Basically your blood glucose level is low while you sleep then right before you wake your body pumps out some hormones to raise your blood glucose to get you ready to wake up. Is your BGL still high later in the day? This is the best resource I’ve found to help explain the dawn effect:

Hope this helps a bit!

First, it can take a while for the body to shift from metabolizing glucose to efficiently metabolizing fat. Second, if you are highly insulin-resistant, it can take a while for your blood glucose readings to come down. Or so I understand, anyway. I’ll bet @richard can explain it a lot better, however.

What was the BG before you started keto in the morning? Is it trending down? Are you using intermittent fasting? What part of the day fed vs fasted? Finally do you take vitamin c supplements? Best to avoid taking them until you get the glucose reading, Vitamin C will interfere with the glucose oxidase chemistry that is on the test strip. I know this from personal experimentation. With Vitamin C it was higher than the clinical lab test. Without they were within 5 mg/dl of each other.
