BG Dropping, FAST!

(Joan) #1

My husband has T2, he is not gone full keto but since I have we don’t have many carbs in the house. He has cut out crackers and snacks for the most part but insists on his oatmeal in the morning. So, I’d say he is doing lower carb, and he is feeling better, less aches and pains, more energy. He’s 58, exercises regularly rides his bicycle 10 miles in the morning and 10 at night, he’s been doing this for years so it’s not new. Anyway, suddenly now his BG is dropping like a rock. Halfway thru his bike ride he’s had to stop because his BG was 68 this has happened multiple times now. It’s happened at other times during the day as well. Called the doc and so far the advice is to stop taking the glipizide, well he hasn’t taken that for a couple months now, the other advice was to just eat more and more often.
Has anyone gone thru this? How can a person go keto with dropping blood sugars?

Is he stopping because he feels off? 68 is not dangerously low for most people.

Why would you not want keto to lower your BG to safe levels?

Lose the oatmeal as he’s going to be sending his sugars crazy by eating keto but insisting on oatmeal each morning. They’ll be up and down like crazy but will stabilise with proper keto.

That’s what I thought about oatmeal. At 68 he is all confused, disoriented, and shaking.

Have you tried any of the “keto porridge” recipes to replace his oatmeal?

If he goes keto and gets fat adapted, his blood glucose should stabilize and he will have a constant energy source with fat.

That level isn’t unusually low for someone adapted to keto, mine gets down to the high 50s quite often. Honestly, he will be so much better without the oatmeal. Why does he keep having it, is he worried about fiber?

(Joan) #7

I had no idea there was such a thing, keto oatmeal until yesterday. I’ll have to try that, it’ll probably be good for me too when I need a break from eggs.

He has it stuck in his head that needs to have carbs. He’s coming around but slowly, especially since he’s noticing the aches pains disappearing.

There are several recipes, all the way from coconut concoctions to hemp hearts. The ones with hemp hearts are my favorite. I’m also thinking of working one up that includes oat fiber.

(Joan) #10

That’s the one that I saw, the one with hemp hearts. That looked really good

Hopefully you can convince him to have the keto version as it really will benefit him.

Does he usually high BG? I assume he is just not used to 68 and that is the issue…but if its bothering him so that is clearly not a fun thing to deal with.

I agree getting rid of the Oatmeal is a great start.

Years of Fat phobia is hard to overcome suddenly. Some pork belly bacon lardons sausage etc for breakfast will keep him energized a lot longer than oatmeal. There are essential amino acids in protein and essential fatty acids in fats. But no such thing as “essential sugars” in carbage

(Candy Lind) #14

They also call it n’oatmeal. :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

(Joan) #15

His BG is usually all over the place. If he doesn’t exercise it will jump up, that’s why the doc put him on glipizide, but then he was able to go out an ride consistently so BG levels came down. The low BG isn’t any fun! Not that it’s all about me, but wow!

It is normal to feel "shaky " when your bg drops to normal ranges. His body was so used to high numbers it is trying to adjust. Part of the shakes is sugar withdrawal or "Keto flu " also. I hope he stays on course he will thank you later!

Sounds like his body is still looking for glucose to burn and isn’t truly fat adapted. Once the oatmeal is dropped and his BG stabilises, the 68 shouldn’t feel shaky. My guess would be that he’s been used to high BG’s for some time and now ‘normal’ feels abnormal.

That one is delicious! It was a game-changer for me. I was getting pretty sick of eggs.
