Beano! aka alpha-galactosidase (α-GAL) for cruciferous veggies!

I have had the WORST gas problem for the past 35 years, but who’s counting? I have used peppermint gum and Gas-X and seltzer… and mostly just waited it out because eventually the embarrassing burping will go away… but it is a hardship, I’m not gonna lie.

Since starting keto, I have been incorporating more vegetables into my diet and a salad a day is just um… NO, so I do broccoli, cauliflower and this fabulous low-carb eggplant lasagna concoction… and all of these have been giving me gas attacks on a daily basis.

So I read that Beano isn’t just for beans!!! The alpha-galactosidase (α-GAL) enzyme is lacking in some people genetically, making it difficult to digest a lot of things, beans included. I started taking 2 of these pills (they have another, cleaner version called Bean-Zyme) when I take my first bite of troublesome veggies and I have so far been gas free when I do this!!!

Now, I know some people will say JUST DO CARNIVORE but I have considered and rejected that idea for a variety of reasons.

Anyhow, just wanted to pass that on for anyone who still wants to eat veggies and may be in my gassy boat

I find that keeping my carbohydrate intake under 20 grams a day has virtually eliminated my gas problems. I always regret it when I yield to temptation and eat some carb-laden delight that takes me over the limit.

I suffered severe gas my entire life, and not the burping kind. Until I started keto! Then the never-ending affliction went away in less than a month. I have been free of it since. The biggest difference? I dropped pretty much all vegetables and fruits. Absent a continuing supply of fuel the constant fermentation stopped. I’ll gladly take that over fruit and veggies. I don’t even miss them. The only veggie I eat now is bok choy and it goes through me with no problems. I suspect because it contains so little non-cellulose carbs. I’m a happy camper!

I have found since Keto I never burp or have gas EVER either. I always keep my carbs as low as I can, always under the 20 grams (except for Mother’s Day and my birthday when I ate Sushi -the carbs came mostly from the rice in them -as I tried to stick to the crab-cucmber-avocado choices so didn’t go wild on carbs but definitely over due to the rice in them.

I was fine both of those times and did not gain any weight or feel sick -but I only plan on doing Sushi and going over on those two occasions and on other rare special occasions (such as Christmas Day a bit, not crazy, and on New Year’s Eve for drinking a bit).

In the past, pre-Keto I used to find chewing Peppermint Gum or making Peppermint Tea helped for the tummy upset.

That green bluish black mold that grows on freshly baked bread without preservatives after a few days that’s what Beano actually is (alpha-galactosidase[1]), they, culture it, scrape it up, grind it up make it (shake flask cultivation) into pellets/pills…lol (fermentation of galactose sugars in bread)

Boiling beans and rinsing them several times usually removes the oligosaccharides (what actually causes the gas). I suppose that may be true with any veggie that contains oligosaccharides?

There is a white biofilm that cascades across the mold, those look like microscopic mushrooms under a microscope which reminds me of a book I read a long time ago called St. DuPonte Espirit (if I spelled it right) in France where this purple mold grew on rye when it was stored in a damp place after a harvest when it was wet and rainy, anyway it was a purple fungus called Ergot (microscopic mushrooms) sometimes called “St. Anthony’s Fire” or ”The Burning Bread,” the whole town of Duponte went insane lots of deaths ensued after it was eaten from hallucinations, suicides and homicides because it is natural Lysergic-acid-diethylamide or LSD that was in the milled rye after the flour was baked into bread.

Simply touching this fungus and breaking the microscopic mushrooms will soak right through the skin transdermally…and you know the rest?

IMPORTANT CAVEAT: Ergot can kill you dead including massive hallucinations before your death so don’t mess with this stuff! It is extremely potent, poisonous and toxic stuff in the way of micrograms and can kill you by simply touching it too much!

Hey Bunny yes I know it comes from mold LOL I’m cool with that. I’m not sure where LSD fits in and am pretty sure that Beano doesn’t have any LSD.

I incorporate vegetables into my keto diet. There is a lot of information out there about the benefits of cruciferous vegetables. Another recent post talked about cabbage, which affects me the same way. I can literally eat 1 C of broccoli (3.6 net carbs) and I am a gassy mess. This has gotten WORSE since I started keto because I eat about 2 C of veggies daily. I thought maybe some others are in the same boat, which is why I wrote the post. If this doesn’t apply to you, or the idea of something made from mold (like penicillin) is a turn-off for you, that’s fine… but it seems to me like the responses to this so far have been a) you must not be doing keto right or you wouldn’t have this problem and b) Beano comes from mold so you shouldn’t use it. That honestly isn’t helpful, guys.

I created this post because this discovery was a big deal for me. It allows me to eat vegetables without distress, which helps me stay the course on keto and get my nutritional needs met. I don’t know if others are dealing with this, but I wanted to share in case they are. Hopefully this knowledge will help someone on here as it did me.

Peace.:v::heart:

One thing to be aware of with cruciferous veggies and things like cabbage is they have isothiocyanates, myrosinase and things like sulforaphane which are anti-cancer target compounds which tend to deplete iodine but also give DIM support for good estrogen, so make sure you get enough iodine in your diet but not too much as described here by Chris Masterjohn, Phd?

Restricting salt, replacing iodized salt with natural unrefined salt, and consuming plant foods that generate isothiocyanate can all have their place in a healthy diet, but raise the risk of iodine deficiency. Here’s how to spot the problem and what to do about it.
