Be Prepared - Emergency Food

#1

Before Keto WOE, I was "un-prepared " when I received a hunger message. The message was: “I’m Hungry. Feed Me Right Now”. A plate of nachos, or 2 frosted donuts was how I use to respond. I used to eat grunge.

6 months into KETO WOE and 21 lbs. lighter- I am “prepared” to answer a hunger message.

One of my favorite responses is–a small plate of celery sticks filled with cream cheese. Yummy. Sometimes I make myself a cup of caveman coffee. Sometimes I eat, when I am actually just thirsty. Boy, am I screwed up or what?

Also celery with peanut butter… @DesignPhase

Oh dang YES, Alex! Got to have some peanut butter with celery sticks. What else am I missing? Keep going. Sounds good.

This is such a great point. Making sure I am not hungry has really helped me, I’ve even gone so far as to eat a small meal before going out for dinner, just so I know that hunger won’t be driving any poor decisions if there aren’t many keto-friendly menu choices.

I’ve taken to carrying a 60ml plastic bottle of heavy cream in my handbag so I always have the option of a satisfying coffee :coffee: which will tide me over for several hours.

Another quick fix classic! Although a slightly more messy one requiring a fork (maybe  )

From recent 2KD podcast, bake bacon sandwiched between baking pans - so it comes out absolutely flat - and keep in fridge, and use as a a cracker - Shmeer of cream cheese, butter, PB, cheese slices, whatever… yummmmy :bacon:

Not sure this comment is going to be welcome but at 6 months plus you should no longer be snacking. Push from meal to meal so you let your insulin drop. If you have very low body fat and are not eating enough at meals then hunger could be real. Other than that push past the little hunger pangs and it will pass.
I also will pre eat if I know the food choice will be limited if going out, A couple pieces of precooked pork belly I keep in the fridge. Or I eat this before my one meal a day in case the fat level of the meal is low.

Sometimes I eat when really I just had to pee. Sometimes I wonder if my wires aren’t just crossed but a big tangled ball of crap in the center of my body. I’m sober and recently stopped drinking diet pop at work (where they are free and cold) and my body told me to go find some drugs…because it wanted a freaking pop.

It’s a full time job minding this child inside of me.

can totally relate to so much of this, I think there’s all sorts of hormone stuff going on we just don’t understand sometimes!

PMS does this to me. I posted about it a while back.

Yesterday it peaked. I ended up eating a pan fried small ribeye, tuna straight from the can, a mozzarella stick, a small handful of slivered almonds, and a little bit of leftover pot roast. All for lunch.

Then my cycle started last night and I feel like a normal non-hungry person again today. My body told me what it needed and I reacted accordingly while keeping keto. I may have gone over in protein -I don’t typically track so i don’t know. But I made it through PMS.

I’m following this thread to have a few ideas as far as emergency keto foods to keep around. I don’t typically snack, but PMS makes me ravenous.

Not that I always successfully follow this principle, but I agree with it in spirit. Eating remains an emotional habit, but I continue to chip away at that problem.

Natasha. You are so smart! I love your idea of taking along your own 60 ml plastic bottle of heavy cream for a satisfying coffee on the go. Fabulous idea! I’m going to do that too. Thank you so much. The baby bell swiss on the go, sounds delicious too–Thanks Alex. Having a couple options in my purse makes life do-able, especially when it is a long day of traveling.

I am not comfortable telling other people just forget you are hungry, or thirsty, or lightheaded and push through–it will go away. I am doing OMAD, but sometimes my body tells me to eat a little something more, so I do. Thanks everyone for mentioning so many fabulous Keto friendly options.

I ignored fresh, beautiful food for such a long time. Now, I love salty, savory meat dishes with fat, juices, and sticky bits left in the pan. I am fond of cruciferous veggies prepared in butter.

My husband lost 19 lbs. in the last six months eating along with me. Darn him; he claims he wasn’t really trying, it just happened. Math says I am losing 1/2 lb. to 3/4 lb. per week, although weigh-in isn’t a requisite now. Pants falling down–that was my best indicator. It happened one da, taking a deep cleansing breathe with arms over my head.

I try to resist the urge to snack, but sometimes I have one of the following:

1 ounce almonds (24 almonds):

AlmondsNutrition

1 ounce cream cheese (1/8 of 8-ounce package):

CreamCheeseNutrition

That’s it, quick and easy, no cooking or messing around. And no other options; for me, options are the slippery slope.

I keep the almonds in the freezer. I used to go through a kilo in a few days, but now I think a kilo will last me a year or more. Almonds freeze well!

I use a cleaned out, travel hand-sanitiser bottle for my cream, they have good non-spill lids! :grinning:

Olives are great too if you’re peckish.
